GOODBYE 2015!! HELLO 2016!!

WHAT OCCURRED IN SHY YETI LAND IN 2015 AND WHAT'S IN STORE IN 2016...

Hello beasties!

Welcome back for our final post of 2015. I do hope you all had a splendid Christmas and are now gearing up to celebrating the arrival of 2016 - whether this be by having a party or simply by going to bed early. I'll probably be writing and watching some old telly - I'm currently contemplating having an evening of Prisoner: Cell Block H; watching the last few episodes with a well-loaded gin and tonic! Last time I watched those final episodes I got terribly tipsy on some boozy coffee one Saturday afternoon in about 2003. Ah well, we shall see...

Anyway, I guess this should be considered my review of the year... Clearly not THE year - just MY year, which is enough for most people...

Oh, go on... Indulge me... I've put together a guide of all things Shy Yeti in 2015 - collecting all my posts for the year in one place to re-share the links with you... THE BEAST OF FRIENDS - SEASON 3

My first release of the year - the third season of THE BEAST OF FRIENDS quartet. This is a good one too; seeing a slight shift from humour to a darker set of scripts that tell one sinister story... This season focuses on the arrival of a new flat-mate who causes all manner of horrible events.

It came out a little later than I had intended - but I am very glad to have finally got it out there. This was the 10th anniversary edition of my 8th collection from 2005 and the last of my main batch of early reissues.

I also did a show in celebration of this collection, some months after it's 10th anniversary in late October 2015. It was the only show that I did in 2015 due to being unwell - so it meant a lot that it was such a fun evening. THE BEAST OF FRIENDS - SEASON 4

This was the fourth and final season of BEAST and was published in mid-October, along with a compiled volume of seasons 1 to 4, which I was very keen to produce. This final season contain four longer scripts which rounds up the series... or does it!? Read on to learn the answer...

During 2015 I also posted a lot of new material on my blog. Once I have enough pieces I'll probably put them all into a collection, but for now you can read them at the following links... A lot of them were inspired by day trips that I had or by photographs that I took and I was pleased to be able to share so many of my works in progress; especially during a year when I wasn't so well. I'm happy that I didn't let my writing suffer and kept busy with it - as it's a very important part of my day to day life...

What follows is a list of the projects that I worked on during 2015 which will hopefully be out soon... I'm at different stages with each of these - some may not even be completely finished until 2017, let alone next year... That said, the first of them will be published in January - but I have been busy on it since 2014; it takes time to get these script-books polished, you know.

SHY YETI'S WORKS IN PROGRESS OF 2015...

HOT STUFF!! - SEASON 1

This will be the first project to be released in 2016. It was ready by early December 2015, but I didn't really want it coming out around Christmas - it's nice to release a new project at a start of a new year, even though I've been working on this one since 2014. There will be more posts about this project over the next few weeks and I posted a prologue to the first season a couple of weeks back as one of this year's Christmas stories:

KENSINGTON GORE - SEASON 1

I'm not too far from completing this one - the second of the two spin-off series from THE BEAST OF FRIENDS, I have about 40 pages left to proof. It's set in an area of London near The Royal Albert Hall and features Katrina, Warren and Lucy from BEAST becoming involved in a number of sinister supernatural shenanigans related to a block of expensive apartments that they are managing. There will be more about this once I'm closer to publishing it, but I'm hoping that this will be by April at the latest.

A YETI WAY OF THINKING

I've been working on this collection of my short stories and poems since 2012, but it's been on the back-burner whilst I worked on the 10th anniversary re-releases of my earlier poetry collections. Now those are all re-published I am aiming to get this collection completed by the summer - hopefully around the time that I make my return to The Poetry Café.

BEAST OF FRIENDS - THE MOVIE

I began work on this in autumn 2014 - but didn't want to release it until a year or so after the 4th season of BEAST was published; it's a slightly longer script-book than the previous seasons - but I would like to release it towards the end of 2016, but we shall see. It's a "missing" story in the canon of BEAST scripts - set in Venice one New Years Eve where a killer is murdering wealthy business-yeti who are attending an exhibition of pies.

I am currently working on proofing the 2nd and 3rd seasons of HOT STUFF!! - whilst writing the 4th season, meanwhile I am proofing season 2 and writing season 3 of KENSINGTON GORE... Whether the second seasons of both get released during 2016 depends on how long it takes to get them ready, but it would be nice to release them if I can.

2016 sees the 10th anniversary of my POEMS TO MAKE BEARS GROWL poetry collection, but I'm not sure whether it needs updating as it was the first of my books to be especially designed for Lulu.com. It might be nice to do something to mark the anniversary, but I may do that by doing a special show at The Poetry Cafe; I haven't thought that far ahead yet.

I've also been working for some time on two Mouse Of Commons projects - but they probably won't see the light of day in 2016. The first of these, THREE TALES ARE BETTER THAN ONE is a collection of short stories and might be out by late 2016 - failing that it'll be 2017. The second project is a novel that follows on from the last Mouse novel - but I doubt that will be ready for another 18 months or so as it is low on my list of priorities.

Next time I'll be celebrating the new year by telling you something about the characters and stories involved in the first season of HOT STUFF!!, which is due out in the middle of January.

SOME COMPLETELY RIDICULOUS QUESTIONS, ANSWERED...

ASK SHY YETI - AGAIN!!!

Hello beasties!

This week I am here to be helpful... It's not the first time - but I am always pleased to assist where my advice is sought, especially when it comes to dealing with matters regarding yeti - which is indeed the case with all the questions I have for you, this time.

Shall we get on with it?

My first question today comes from Mrs Margarita Du Bonbon of Little Snickering-On-The-Water... She explains that a cousin of hers is due to visit and will be bringing along a new boyfriend, a yeti. Her question is, as follows...

What do yeti like to eat? Do they have any big preferences?

Well, Margarita... You'll probably not be too surprised to learn that yeti aren't especially fussy and will pretty much eat anything! It would be fair to say that they do have their favourites - but they are quite predictable and I'm sure you won't be surprised to learn that most of all they like pies. It is far from unheard of for them to have a savoury pie for their main course and then a sweet pie for dessert. Most people can accept that, but it's the actual flavours that some might consider either unconventional or simply plain disgusting. Savoury flavours include such specialities as Badger Snot and Toe-nail Clippings, Peanut Butter-infused Seaweed or Cream of Ear-wax D'Vole being in their top three. If you think their favourite savoury pies sound bad, then you're probably not going to approve of the sweet choices; Cherry and Duck Spit flan for one - more often than not served with weevil milk custard and sprinkle of mould on top. As for their favourite drink - there is really only one hot beverage that springs to mind and this would be Belly-button-fluff tea... Yum! Time to change the subject, I think...

Next up we have Carmen Star-fish, who is an Oceanology student at Kings College - London, Carmen poses the following question...

Do yeti have bizarre or interesting hobbies - and if so, are many of them pastry based?

Well, yes - I'm sure they do, although you may be surprised to learn that their hobbies aren't especially related to their personalities or yeti-ness. Believe it or not yeti like stamp collecting, ballroom dancing and train-spotting like everybody else. They're not, however, especially keen on football - the sheer stupidity of the game renders them speechless and I can't say I blame them. As for hobbies related to pastry, the only ones that I can think of would be baking. One of the biggest pastimes in yeti circles is a version of the game hide-and-seek - but involves yeti trying to pass themselves off as coats or rugs. It's quite a fun game - although I did once get home to find that I was wearing my friend's mother as a hat - she'd fallen asleep having drunk one too many belly-button fluff teas and I'd totally mistaken her for the head-gear that I'd arrived in. Ah well! These simple mistakes will happen from time-to-time!

Our third question comes from a retired vacuum cleaner of my acquaintance - he used to be called Henry, but since his retirement from vacuuming he now prefers to be known as Roberto The Robot - the world's one and only robot drag queen...

Is there a special yeti language that only these esteemed beasties understand and is it easy for non-yeti to learn?

This is a good one... My sources tell me yes, indeed there are - although I am embarrassed to say that I have never, personally, learnt it. The best way I could probably describe it is that this language is a little like welsh or Catalonian - not everybody who grows up there learns it or if they do they don't necessarily use it once they've moved away from the ancestral home. There are a number of official and unofficial languages - the one thing they all have in common is that they are based on a pattern of guttural growls and semi-purrs; a number of them based on similar secret languages as originally devised by a number of the most famous UK girl bands of the early to mid 00s. If you want a definitive tome on the historical variety of yeti languages, then I recommend the book "Speak-a-da-Yeti" by Charles Grrr, published by Beeches Books in 2014 for the somewhat expensive price of £79.99, although it does come with a CD of Traditional Yeti Folk Tunes and a promotional Charlie Grrr tea towel. "Yeti" is tough to learn at the start - but once you get the basics then I think you'll quickly get the hang of it. That's what the books says, anyway.

Our previous questions have been more about yeti life-styles than actually seeking out specific advice from a yeti point of view. This fourth and final question seeks to enquire about yeti habits, but appeals to the budding agony aunt in me. Mavis Scampering of Nonsuch Park writes...

I have recently started dating a yeti, but we do not have a great deal in common. Yes - that's right, he has a "great deal" (of pies) and my family and myself are widely considered to be quite "common" manners-wise. I am worried that our differences will soon eat away at our new romance. I have considered suggesting a holiday - but am unfamiliar with the sort of destinations that yeti favour. Any advice gratefully received - as I'd hate for this new love to wither and die so soon - I'll do (almost) anything!

I thought about how to reply to this one for a while and although I like your idea of a holiday I am not sure that, in itself, it would be enough to save a sinking relationship... Yeti are notorious for their short attention spans, so don't go blaming yourself necessarily. That said, there's no harm in persevering - most yeti dream of visiting their ancient homeland, which few know is actually the Isle Of Wight... You can get there pretty quickly on the ferry from Portsmouth or Lymington, for instance, and the weather can be quite sunny if you pick a day when it isn't raining. As far as your relationship is concerned it could well be that you are pressing the abort button before you've even given the rocket a chance to fly. I don't know what you've heard about the Isle of Wight but it's hardly the South Of France - you may find that your beau and his family are far from being the rich Lords of The Manor that you make them out to be. Even if they are better off than your own family then there is no reason that you can't impress them - and equally so they need to do the same and welcome you in. If you love your yeti then you will try your hardest to make it work - if he is unable to do his share then, fair enough, move on... But if you do give it a go then for all you know, the best may be yet(I) to come!

Well, that's it for now - some reasonably sensible questions, although I'm not sure that this can be said for all of the answers. Please do send me more of your questions and I'll do my best to reply to them in a future post, probably in December...

I had a mini-rant on Facebook the other day about the feeling I get from the poetry scene that certain types or styles of poems are okay and some are not; with probably funny rhyming poems being at the bottom of the barrel. I got some support for what I wrote - but I do wish the issue was addressed a little more honestly, as a lot of people really enjoy the lighter material. Anyway, this is what I wrote - maybe us dafter poets need to stick together! Let's start a gang...

HAPPY HALLOWEEN...

SOMETHING FOR THE ZOMBIES IN THE AUDIENCE...

HAPPY HALLOWEEN!!!

Hello! Yes... I know I only last posted yesterday - but I couldn't let Halloween go uncelebrated!

I will be brief, however and just post a new-ish poem which is suitably scary. It's from my forthcoming collection, A YETI WAY OF THINKING, which is due out in early 2015 and its all about zombies...

THE GORGEOUS DEAD

The gorgeous dead are coming
They are looking mighty fine!
Here they come across the fields –

They come in search of discount wine!
Bargain-hunters made of bones –

I trust they know what they are seeking...
Although deceased they know their stuff;
Despite their dribbling and leaking...
They're in their bestest bib and tucker;
They do stand out and they impress!
They're not much into conversation –

But hey they sure know how to dress!

If you are clumsy and they bite you –

Remember! The camera never ever lies!
You'll soon attract the TV news –

Not just a cloud of buzzy flies!

The gorgeous dead are coming!
They are looking rather swish!
All the others stink real bad –

Like offal, tripe or rotten fish.
But some undead prefer to use –

Some fancy foreign class cologne!
They will not hang out with a corpse –

Who'll drool and gurn or simply moan!

Folk should just compliment their look;

They ought to actually be proud;
Even those flies should dress up smart –

And no their buzz should not be loud.
When the dead hunt for your flesh –

Despite their age they still look swell!
Doused in the finest aftershave –

It does the job to hide the smell!

The gorgeous dead are coming!

They are looking kinda cool!
They buy their top hats from the best –

'Cos fashion sense is there best tool!
They stalk the streets, out on the hunt...
For some nice victims just to chew...
They won't get brains down their new clothes –

For there'll be trouble if they do!
They're not as scary as you think;
They are a tough hard-working bunch!
They only want a little friendship!
Before they take you out to lunch...
We forget they once were people –

They are the victims of neglect...

So let's pick up their fallen limbs –

And yes – also offer them respect!

THE MUGSHOT SHOW!!

BACK AT THE POETRY CAFE...

Hello beasties!!

This time I'm going to be looking back at last Wednesday's show at The Poetry Café. Sadly Mr Smallshaw was unable to make the evening due to family commitments - but don't worry, he's fine and should be back with us for our show at the end of October. We did, however, have a number of open-mike readers and various friends, partners and passersby - which made it the busiest Shy Yeti show so far this year. I'm busy working on my YETI WAY OF THINKING collection, but as this evening was meant to be more about the poems from MUGSHOTS, I decided not to read anything from the new collection; we can get to that next year once it's released. The first two pieces that I read that evening were both from last year's NOT AS SHY AS I WAS - two of my favourites which I have also recorded videos for (under the MRSHYYETI profile).

The next batch of poems came from a number of different collections, although what links them is that they were all included in 2012's SHY YETI STILL RULES OKAY. GRANDPA'S WIG and LAID are both 100-word stories, THE CROCODILE was written sometime ago inspired by then boss's boss, whilst IS IT CHRISTMAS ALREADY? seemed topical and PEACE OF MIND hasn't had an airing in a while.

Following the performance of our first open-miker I read this verse from POETIQUETTE that I had revisited for the first time in years just that week. I enjoyed performing it - but I'd like to do more with it at some stage.

Another open-miker, a brief break, another open-miker and then I was into my final run of poems for the night; a slightly shorter show due to John's absence. The last five poems were all from different collections, but all of them were also brought together for my SHY YETI RULES OKAY compilation in 2009.

Thanks to everybody who showed up, especially Calum and Ian Green (who I'd not seen in about 20 years, despite staying in touch). Thank you also to all the open-mikers who read, apologies for not crediting you, but you didn't announce your names before performing and I didn't get a chance to ask.

Hello beasties!!

This time I'm going to be giving you a quick talking through last week's show at The Poetry Café - a week's already sped by - so hear are all the details:

POETRY CAFE, COVENT GARDEN, LONDON

There was no real first and second half as it was so hot - so we ran through these poems and John's selections in one longer segment, lasting approximately one hour. I do not have listed the titles of John's poems (some do not have titles!) None of this show was video recorded.

This piece was written early last year and is one which appears in my next collection, A YETI WAY OF THINKING.

These were all from my second compilation SHY YETI STILL RULES OKAY (2012), most of which I have read before - although A MONKEY'S UNCLE was chosen randomly by the audience, who were asked to pick a page number. BECOMING MORE CAT-LIKE is still one of my favourites to read live and one that I have managed to read at that venue every year since it was written back in 2010. The next five poems were from A YETI WAY OF THINKING and are ones that I have read before at shows over the last year or so, although THE STUPIDITY OF BIRDS is a short story that made it's debut on the night. The final section of poems were from SHY YETI RULES OKAY (2009) and have all been performed at The Poetry Cafe previously, at some stage - although this is the first time in 2014 for A LEARNING EXPERIENCE and THE TRUE LIGHT. JOHN, I'M ONLY RHYMING

John was keen for me to read "JOHN..." as it is partly inspired by him - so this is the poem that we finished with - another from SHY YETI STILL RULES OKAY (2012) I'm not sure I've ever done an encore! ;)

There were a number of poems that I had set aside to read, but didn't get to - most of them being new ones from the next collection and one just being a favourite: poems were - An Ideal World, The Dreaded Lurgy, Friday The 13th, A Harmless Prank, Game Plan and The Ungrateful Valentine.
