SHY YETI RETURNS TO VENICE: BIRTHDAY TRIP 2...

Hello beasties!!

This week we look back to my recent trip to Venice, as well as looking forward to my next Poetry Cafe show! Those of you who have followed my misadventures for a while will recall that this is my second trip to Venice in two years - my first was back in December 2006 and yes, my last was in November 2010. The first trip helped me fall in love with Venice and the second trip helped me fall even more in love with the place - the only problem being that I lost most of my footage that I filmed there due to being stupid and clumsy, although some did survive and appeared in my SHY YETI VS AUTUMN PT 2 episode, which you can view at: http://youtu.be/6R928Bs4Ekw

"Hello and welcome to a new episode of Shy Yeti On Location. This time we're in Venice. Now I don't mind telling that Venice is my favourite city in the world. I love it more than Paris, I love it more than L.A., better than New York, Rome, Barcelona, Berlin, Munich, Dusseldorf, Cologne, Krakow, Prague, Riga, Oslo, better than Nice, better than Milan, better than Dublin, San Francisco, Las Vegas or San Diego - I love it even more than London. More than Keswick in the Lake District, Sutton Park in the Midlands, more than Portland, Oregon, The Channel Islands. Even more than my home town of Salisbury, Wiltshire. Venice. I love it. Best city ever. But that's just my opinion.

But why? Why do I love it so? I love it because Venice is an adventure. It's all about the canals, of course, but even more so it is a pedestrians city, a city to get lost in, to find different facets of with every visit. In fact getting lost in the city is one of my favourite things to do. You can only get so lost before you fall head first into the lagoon, so basically you can't go too far wrong - but it can be quite an adventure. All those alleys to explore, all those twists and turns, it's like being in some kind of living computer game and sometimes it can be almost overwhelming. But I love that about Venice! Every time I've been here - and this is my third visit in six years - I have only ever seen the city at its best. I've always visited in the autumn, I've only ever seen it when it's sunny. I've never seen it foggy, smelly, crowded or suffering from some kind of city wide ice cream shortage. I'd probably like it even if I did. Anyway, to date the city has only ever chosen to show me its good side. For that I thank it. I'm going to show you around, last time I was here I didn't get a proper chance - but that was my fault - I was a big stupid stupid yeti and I did a bad, bad thing.

I was last here in November 2010 for my 37th birthday with my friends Harry and Calum and we had a great, great trip and I did originally record an episode or two of my usual yeti madness. Unfortunately on the day we travelled home I stupidly tried to delete a photo for reasons that I needn't go into now, but instead of deleting just one photo I deleted everything. I was sad. I did manage to film just a little bit for an episode before I went home, but even then I knew all the footage that I had recorded was now lost. I wanted to come back immediately, but it took two years. I'm here now and I want to do the city justice. Venice, here I am - let's go and play!"

Monday 5th November

Today was the first day of my holiday, although we didn't leave for Venice on this day. However there was some filming done on this day for the episodes that I intend to be filming this week. I returned to a location that I last visited in early 2011 when I was taking promotional photos for my YETI HUGS AND OTHER HORRORS collection. This time Dominic and I spent about 20 minutes recording the intro for the new episodes set in Venice and took a few photos under a rather lovely tree covered in autumn leaves. Hopefully it'll make a nice start to the first of the episodes. Once done we were off to IKEA for Swedish meatballs and then went to see the new James Bond movie, Skyfall. A very good day, all in all!

Tuesday 6th November

Headed for Venice today and arrived without much of a hitch at all. On previous visits I arrived on the outskirts of the city by coach and then walked on into wherever the hotel was (near the railway station the first time, near Rialto Bridge the 2nd time), but on this occasion we travelled in by boat. By water bus to be precise. It was a bit of a squeeze, but we all got on board in the end. I managed to get a few photos and to film a little of this journey in and I'm sure this will be part of the opening title sequence of the episode. Having checked into our hotel we went out to find some dinner, heading for St Mark's Square - via an establishment selling ice cream; I had strawberry and blueberry yoghurt by the way. After this we found a very nice Italian restaurant called Rossopomodoro which was not far from the Square and had pizza and pasta and all manner of fine things. After dinner we visited a couple of tourist shops and I found some props that may be useful for the episodes of Shy Yeti On Location that I hope to be filming here over the next few days. Filming today was mostly establishing shots - although we did film one brief sequence which may be part of one of the dream sequences that I have decided will be a big part of these episodes. Having found the way back to our square we walked on a little to see Rialto Bridge at night and then came back to our hotel for an early night. Not that I slept very well, I was probably too excited!

Wednesday 7th November 2012

Today was another very busy day and I got a lot filmed for the Venice specials. We headed for the Academia area of the city, which is actually very close to where our hotel is. Took all the usual tourist photos on the bridge and then headed on. Today I was using 3 cameras! Poor Dominic he was so patient! The first is the camera that I use for filming and normal photos, the second was my Blackberry which I use for taking photos for Twitter and Facebook and the third was my new camera, which I am only really using for taking photos with one of the "art" modes, so that the photos that you take look like paintings!! I filmed all manner of little sketches during the day, I may list some of them below - although they won't mean much until you've seen the finished videos, which probably won't be until early-2013, except for one or two little pieces that I hope to include in my Christmas episodes. Highlights today included the beginning of a couple of yeti dances, the return of the ghost hunter from the forthcoming belated Halloween episode and the recording of my new-ish  poem, THE MAN-EATER OF SURREY GREEN. We spent the whole day just wandering around some of my favourite Venice places, eating ice creams, getting lost and then finding ourselves again. I managed to find my way back to a favourite ice cream seller and favourite coffeehouse, not to mention Venice's very own version of CO-OP. In the evening we ate locally and explored some of the streets around our square - I even found some grafitti of a monster which I took photos of back in 2010 when I was last here, but then lost! You will be glad to hear that he has now been safely recaptured!

The list of things filmed (below) deliberately doesn't give away too much, but may act as a bit of a clue as to the contents of the two episodes filmed during our days in Venice.

Filmed:

X Intro (to camera, but mainly v/o)
X Phone scenes
X Xmas poem intro
X Man eater of Surrey Green
X Start of 2 Yeti dances
X Silly scene with Dominic
X Paul worries about manager
X Dream sequences
X Third Time Lucky plug

Thursday 8th November 2012

Today we were as busy as ever... After another fantastic breakfast and a quick trip back to visit the local monster again in daylight! After that we headed to the Rialto Bridge and had a wander around there before heading to where we wanted to catch our boat on our way to the island of Murano, which is known for its glass blowing industry. On the way we recorded a few silly sketches - one where I'm playing a spy and am paired with Bruss the bear, who joined the family when I was in Brussels last month. Other than this I recorded my new poem ARE THEY AWARE I'M A WEREWOLF? Soon after we caught the boat and arrived in Murano where we had lunch and I took a lot of photos before recording two poems, one of them a new piece called ON FIRST NAME TERMS WITH LOVE and the second an old piece, WICKED SANTA that I want to include in the Christmas episode. We also witnessed a very daft scene involving a dog, some bread and some pigeons - but you'll have to wait until the video comes out to see what happens there! After some coffee and ice cream and a quick return by "the ghost hunter" we were back on the boat just as it grew dark, which made for some nice photos and by the time we reached St Mark's Square it was fully dark. We did a cheap tea at McDonald's and wandered around the streets after dark, but mainly I just took photos as I wanted to preserve space on my camera as I had nearly exhausted my second memory card already!

Filmed:

X General shots around Venice and Murano
X Are They Aware I'm A Werewolf poem
X Secret agent comment with bear
X Goodbye from Venice
X On First Name Terms With Love poem
X Wicked Santa - Xmas poem
X Ghost hunter

Friday 9th November 2012

Friday was our last full day and the original plan had been to take the train to either Verona or Vicenza or maybe even to head over to The Lido. In the end I decided that this would just take me too far away from Venice itself and that there were still places that I wanted to revisit in the city. Before leaving the hotel we recorded a scene where I wake from a weird dream and also a version of a prose piece from THIRD TIME LUCKY called A FORTNIGHT TO ACHIEVE. Our pass for the water buses was still valid until nearly 1 O'clock and so we took the Murano boat over the cemetery and had a look around there; filming another "ghost hunter" piece. After this we took a cruise around the bay and got off at St .Elena and walked through the park. I recorded a version of another poem from THIRD TIME LUCKY, this time another prose piece called THE BUTTERFLY COLLECTORS; not to mention a yeti dance and a couple of silly sketches with Dominic and Bruss the bear. Having picked up sandwiches from a nearby cafe we sat outside to eat them and then filmed some more weird scenes for the dream sequence and a little further along one final "ghost hunter" sketch. By this stage I was almost out of memory, but there was still enough for a brief yeti dance in St Mark's Square and a quick Venice limerick that I came up with on the spot. Originally I had hoped to read a piece called SOME VINDICTIVE CHILD from THIRD TIME LUCKY, but that had to be dropped; the rest of the space on the memory card I saved for various photos which I took around the city in the late afternoon and evening. That evening we returned to restaurant from the first night and also had a bit of a wander around Venice after dark to take a few more photos.

Filmed:

X Wake up from dream
X Yeti dances
X A Fortnight To Achieve (3rd)
X The Butterfly Collectors (3rd)
X Paul and bear comment
X Ghost hunter
X Limerick

As mentioned above, I also came up with a little limerick, which is becoming quite a Venetian tradition with me!

There once was a lady of Venice;
Whose favourite sport it was tennis!
"Well, her backhand appals -
And she fondles the balls!
Well, my dear - she is simply a menace!"

Saturday 10th November 2012

Today, was my birthday (my 39th!) - but it was time for us to head home. This blow was sweetened somewhat by it having rained overnight and for the first time in the trip the weather was overcast rather than sunny... After a good breakfast we went exploring near Rialto Bridge and I took a few more photos and recorded a little scene that I want to include at the end of one of the Venice episodes. We headed for the boat via one last gelato in St Mark's Square and flew home a little before five! All in all a brilliant trip - concluding the weekend with a nice walk across Richmond Park via the Marc Bolan memorial statue in Barnes on Sunday afternoon.

There will be more photos nearer the time that these episodes are edited, right now I'm not sure when that's going to be - it may well not be until the new year now as I've still got such a backlog of episodes, however there should be some Venice in the Christmas episode.

My next Poetry Cafe show is on Friday 16th at The Poetry Cafe, less than 2 days away... See you there at 7.30pm if you can make it! If not then I'll tell you all about it next week!

More soon!

Yeti hugs,

Paul xx

THIRD TIME LUCKY IS RELEASED!

Hello beasties!

This week I'm just here to announce the release of the 10th anniversary special of THIRD TIME LUCKY and also to share with you a piece from that collection, that I've never really focused on before.

THIRD TIME LUCKY, published in late 2002, was Paul’s third self-published collection and his second to include completely contemporary compositions. Long before he became Shy Yeti he was just plain Paul Chandler; what hasn’t changed is that he always wrote daft verse! Until now THIRD TIME LUCKY has only been available alongside its sister volume GO 4TH AND DIVIDE (due to be re-issued in 2013) so this is the first time it has stood alone. This version is a special 10th anniversary edition containing photos and behind-the-scenes information about the book. This collection includes many poems that Paul still performs today such as COMPUTER DATING, GOOD HUG, HERBAL TEABAGS, OH, FLORENCE!!, PARTY GIRL, SOON ON YOUR WAY, TAKEN, THINGS AIN’T WHAT THEY USED TO BE (PT 1) and X-MAS SHOP LIFTER, but many that he doesn’t! So… Sit back and enjoy!!!

Hardback: http://www.lulu.com/shop/paul-chandler/third-time-lucky/hardcover/product-20491185.html

The paperback edition is £7.99 and the hardback £11.99

I'm busy working on new poems for future books, mainly working on my Blackberry on and off through the day. My most recent completed piece is called ON FIRST NAME TERMS WITH LOVE, not to mention the piece THE DAY AFTER HALLOWEEN which I posted as an additional post last week...

Next week we'll have a diary from the Venice trip with hopefully plenty of photos...

That's it for now, more soon...

Yeti hugs,

Paul xx

THEY FOUND HIM WANDERING (IN RICHMOND PARK)

They found him wandering in Richmond Park
Wild-eyed, hair astray – tozzled and twig strewn; a barber's nightmare.
He'd been eating daffodils and something that he'd picked up out of a bin…
A couple of walkers had spotted him staring strangely at large footprints in fresh mud;
He'd bent down and begun kissing the earth!!!
The Police had been called; just in case he was dangerous…
But when they came he wouldn't say a word, instead he just pointed at the prints…
“It was as if he'd lost something…” said the arresting officer before they took him away; For his own protection mind; just to get him sorted out – not a BAD arrest or anything!
No one could understand him – or what had made the footprints; best left well alone…
“No-one has feet that size – not even the Abominable Snowman!”
Said the Duty-Sergeant on the night they kept him in…
“Not a man!” shouted the stranger, “A woman!” It was the only thing he said all night.
Next day they had him bundled off to hospital to be observed…
“It was rather like having a sulky adolescent come to stay…”
Said the Duty-Sergeant – for their guest hadn't said another word…
Once settled Sister was heard to have her own opinion
“He's quite an attractive young man under all that hair…”
He'd scrubbed up nicely – but wasn't happy…
No-one seemed able to do anything for him, “Let me go back to her…”
He sobbed during his first night in the hospital, “Let me go back!”
There wasn't very much else that they could do…
They discussed it and agreed that they couldn't keep him in much longer…
But next morning – somehow – he was gone…
They had found him wandering in Richmond ParkThat first time.
But he was never sighted again; except maybe once…
A scruffy young man sitting under an oak tree…
Eating daffodils with what the observer described as looking like –
“Some kind of Amazon woman at least eight foot tall!!”
“Let me go back to her…” he had pleaded; seems he found his own way eventually.
Happy wanderers lost somewhere in the depths of the Park…  Paradise.

HOT OFF THE PRESS: THE MORNING AFTER HALLOWEEN...

Hello beasties,

Here's a little extra reading for you, this week - as it's topical...

Enjoy!

More on Monday!

Yeti hugs,

Paul xx

PS Check out my SPOOKYCREEP posts on Twitter @SHYYETI  Although there are only two, so far!!

THE MORNING AFTER HALLOWEEN

There are sad looking zombies skulking around by the tube station opposite where I live, this morning and what appears to be a werewolf in a tank top.

Seriously, orange and pink stripes? I guess it matches his eyes...

Something makes me think that Halloween didn't go so well for them this year.

This is the hangover of all that blood lust.

People just weren't going out last night. It was too wet and nobody “invited” the vampires in; not even the sexy ones.

Nobody was feeling charitable or maybe they've finally wised up.

Today there are blood-stains on the wall by the boards where the train-times are listed. How long will it take them to clear up that mess?

Last night a poltergeist went crazy out there, spinning about amongst the returning commuters. It seemed like they were out there screaming for hours, but in the end I think the poltergeist was screaming too.

I called The Police after about twenty minutes, but they never came so I watched The Sound Of Music in just my vest and pants. I made nachos and cheese too, boy were they good.

It's kind of quiet now. Yet even through the double-glazing, I can hear one of them crying.

I'm thinking that it's probably that old vampire woman that I saw sitting on the swings in the Park as I came back from the post office around dusk yesterday.

I presumed I’d still be safe at that time of day, but I think a lot of that lot have forgotten the rules – it’s as if those old conventions about sunlight, garlic and crosses no longer work. I saw a werewolf with pierced ears last week – they were actually made from silver bullets.

I stared at her just that little too long and she turned into a bat right in front of me.

She flapped lethargically in my general direction, but I just walked faster.

In the end I think she was disorientated and got caught in some netting that the Police put up over the crime scene at the weekend. Did you hear about that?

Apparently they put the netting up to cover a pair of statues that suddenly showed up. Rumour has it that two gorgons were arguing over a man or a cigarette or maybe both and they ended up turning one another to stone.

Really, the monsters just couldn't get it together this year...

Even the yeti that used to run the corner shop has sold up and gone back to whatever mountain he grew up on.

But you know what, I think our days are numbered, that the night creatures will rally back.

Because it’s weird… It’s like things are changing… I mean, yesterday in the park I presumed I’d still be safe at that time of day, but I think some of the supernaturals have forgotten the rules – they’re not scared any more; nothing has the same effect. It’s as if those old conventions about sunlight, garlic and crosses stopped working.

I saw a werewolf with pierced ears last week – with studs actually made from silver bullets.

I can still hear that vampire woman, she's fluttering about in the loft space somewhere above my head. It's probably time I did the decent thing and put her out of her misery; the ladder to the attic works – I oiled the mechanism no more than a month ago.

I could be up there in a moment; because I won't be able to relax if she keeps sobbing like that all day. I'm doing it for her benefit... For my benefit. Now... Where's my stake?

Sure, she'll be scared when she first sees me, but then glad in the end that I found her and helped her out of her misery...

Next Halloween things may work out better for them – and then where shall we be!?

HELLO! HELLO! IT'S HALLOWEEN...

Hello beasties!!

HAPPY HALLOWEEN!!!

This week we're celebrating all things creepyspooky and that means that we also have a few treats in store! The next couple of posts may be slightly shorter than usual, as there is another overseas location trip coming up, not to mention the next Poetry Cafe show, but I can assure you that there is still a lot to keep you distracted whilst I'm busy!

First up we have a new film to unveil, the first of two episodes that I hope to post up this week - it's called SHY YETI'S HAUNTED KITCHEN...

This is the first of two Halloween films released this year for the SHY YETI ON LOCATION series. This first episode goes out in time for the spooky day itself, whilst the 2nd episode may be a tad belated because it needs a little extra time to complete. That second episode (coming soon!) contains the usual amount of silliness, poetry and yeti dancing, whilst SHY YETI'S HAUNTED KITCHEN is really less poetry, more silliness and even more cooking! Basically it's all about a certain yeti cooking Halloween biscuits and all the typical chaos that you might expect from that! There is also some rather lovely footage of some deer in a Park. This episode was filmed over the weekend of the 20th and 21st October 2012 in both the Hampton Court and Vauxhall area. The film stars Paul Chandler and Dan Hodges with camerawork also from Paul and Dan, but also with a lot of help from Barry Dunkley and Toby Warburton. Music is by Spooky Yeti and all content of this video is Copyright Paul Chandler 2012. A big thank you to all who helped out with the making of this crazy instalment!

Please Note: Although it's introduced as a mini-episode, that bit was recorded before the actual cooking footage and the finished episode ended up at almost 12 minutes!

Youtube: http://youtu.be/EKi1SvHV_Rc

This weekend I was working on another new SHY YETI ON LOCATION (S.Y.O.L.) episode, this one being the Christmas Special, which I intend to record material for between now and the first week of December; along with what I also intend to film whilst in Venice... I'll need some time to edit it, you realise! This weekend I was filming back down in my home town of Salisbury and recorded the poem LOOK! I'M NO SCROOGE, which has previously only been available as part of one of the Radio Wey episodes. I also recorded a couple of other scenes in my parents loft, where I am trying to locate Christmas decorations! I am hoping that filming for this episode will also take place in Derby in early December, not to mention also whilst I'm away. As many excuses as possible to get Venice into future episodes!!

So yes... Next week, I'll be looking ahead to my trip to Italy and I'll be releasing the 10th anniversary edition of THIRD TIME LUCKY in time for the next Poetry Cafe show on Friday 16th November... I'll also be sharing a poem from that collection and telling you a bit about the diary that I hope to be keeping whilst I'm overseas.

We finish this week with a very new poem for Halloween - it was written over the last week or so, on my Blackberry, whilst commuting into work and is entitled ARE THEY AWARE I'M A WEREWOLF? A first draft of the first verse and chorus of this piece appears in the new SHY YETI episode, but I guess I'll record a full version - possibly for my half-completed EPISODE WITHOUT A THEME 2 edition of S.Y.O.L. which needs to be completed at some stage.

If all goes to plan then I'll be posting next week's post on Monday, before I head off - and with a bit of luck the other Halloween episode will be ready by then too; if not then it'll be up by the time I get back! I'll do my best!!

More soon...

Yeti hugs,

Paul xx

PS We now have well over 14,000 hits on the MRSHYYETI Youtube channel at: http://www.youtube.com/user/MRSHYYETI! Not to mention all the hits that we have on the Vimeo one at: https://vimeo.com/shyyeti Thanks all again for watching!

ARE THEY AWARE I'M A WEREWOLF?

There are many questions, folk ignore!
Questions no-one cares to ask...
I'm surprised that no-one's freaking -
Or has taken me to task!
For they must have heard my howling -
In the garden late at night!
They must have seen my furry ears -
But I guess they're simply too polite!
Yes, too polite to pass a comment -
Do they presume I'm vaguely ill?
Have they not seen me when I'm crazy?
When comes the time for me to kill!

Oh, are they aware I'm a werewolf?
Do they know that I live for the fight?
Do they know I'm forever a night fiend?
That my teeth are like knives when I bite?
Well, surely they see I get moody -
Listen up, I'm not going to lie!
They'll soon witness my little were-secret;
When the full moon it rises up high!

There are many questions, folk ignore...
Far too unnerved by what they'll hear!
The sound of screaming in the forest;
Which quickly brings the sweat of fear!
There are no bats here in my belfry -
Just random noise and manly growls...
Dirty footprints in the carpets -
And ruddy bloodstains in the towels!
If they don't know the facts already -
This evidence will shock them numb...
When they put two 'n' two together -
To see the beast that I become!

Oh, are they aware I'm a werewolf?
Not the sort that they'll cut down to size!
They will never see me swift approaching;
Cos the daylight's my friendly disguise!
I'm not some coward who they can go bully -
Nor some creep whom they might take the piss!
No, I'm a rather cross, ravenous werehound;
Some cruel monster they can't just dismiss!

There are many questions, folk ignore -
With answers still left unexplored...
Oh, the horror that's my history -
P'rhaps is something best ignored!
Yes, cos when the blood is flowing -
I cannot say I ever fret!
Yes, when I'm done I lick my lips -
But there's no feeling of regret!
Cos I've a duty to my victims -
To bring them right out of their shell!
To make them savour their last moments;
If a job's worth doing, do it well!

Oh, are they aware I'm a werewolf?
The sort who stalks out at night, cannot rest!
The kind who'd snaffle them all up for breakfast -
The type their mother's most probably detest!
All that rubbish 'bout sharp silver bullets;
Disregard it, these days we're immune!
So from this werewolf you ought to start running...
For when I eat you, there's no chance you'll swoon...

NEW VIDEOS, NEW BOOKS AND BIRTHDAY TRIPS...

Hello beasties!

This week we're going to look ahead to what's been going on in yeti-world over the last few days and what is coming up over the next few weeks into November...

But first, I have a new episode to announce - it the second of the two episodes that were filmed in Broadstairs during August...

SHY YETI'S SEA-SIDE SHUFFLE - PART 2 is the second part of a two part series from the Folk Festival In Broadstairs, recorded in August 2012. It contains two poems and an alternative version of a rather silly song - not to mention yeti dancing and a whole load of other silliness. The poems included are GRANNY ETHEL KEEPS THEM DECENT and THEY DON'T RHYME THEIR POEMS IN L.A. and the song is called ONCE I LOST MY HEART TO A CORNISH PASTY - the words and music are also by myself and it's "sung" by yours truly. There are also a few clips from my Open-Mike appearances (the full versions can be seen earlier on this profile) and the poem I WILL EAT PIES, from my September 2012 appearance at The Poetry Cafe. There are also yeti dancing and a few rather silly moments! Broadstairs camera-men: Paul Chandler and Dan Hodges. Poetry Cafe camera-man: Calum Williamson. Music: Paul Chandler and Dan Hodges. Thank you to the people of Broadstairs for their singing and dancing, especially anything that appears in this episode. The film and its contents are Copyright Paul Chandler 2012.

There's also a SUTTON PARK (2012) mini-sode up, exclusive to Youtube - but it is very short - under a minute!!

Sutton Park (2012) Minisode: http://youtu.be/dqYI2Fb1Xu4

Next up is some "music..."

Soundcloud link: http://soundcloud.com/shyyeti/what-a-horror-mr-yeti-4

This is one of 5 ear-shattering tunes that I whisked up to go with the two Halloween episodes of SHY YETI ON LOCATION that I am due to release over the next couple of weeks, before I move on to working on the next SUTTON PARK episode. This music, will probably end up using them in my SUTTON PARK episodes too!!

This weekend I was busy filming inserts for future episodes, working with no less than 3 different cameramen... I know! I know! Such a floozy... :)

On Saturday, I returned to Bushy Park, where I recorded an intro for SHY YETI'S HAUNTED COOKERY SHOW, which is a surprise Halloween episode, that has jumped ahead of the existing pre-recorded Halloween special, which will probably now be entitled SHY YETI'S BELATED HALLOWEEN HOO-HAA!!! The opportunity came up to film this episode over the weekend and I also wasn't certain that I'd manage to get the other episode edited in time, whereas the cookery episode is more of a quick edit. Camera-man on the day was Toby W, a new convert to the world of yeti! I had intended to record a full poem, however I managed to leave behind my script - so in the end I read the first verse and chorus of a new poem called ARE YOU AWARE I'M A WEREWOLF? which isn't even completed yet. We also filmed a bit of an introduction for my 2012 Christmas episode! I've never done one of those before, but I aim to film most of it through November, partly in Salisbury and probably a little bit in Venice, whilst filming the other Venice episodes.

On Sunday I popped over to Dan and Baz's near Vauxhall and we filmed the actual cooking segments of two episodes. The first episode was the Halloween episode, which I originally expected would be no more than 5 minutes, but looks like it's going to be, at least ten. We cooked Halloween biscuits for that episode. The other episode filmed was us making an Italian apple cake, which I'm aiming to include in the food themed episode that I began filming a month or two back... I'll have to check back, but I think it's now pretty much done, but at the moment I'm not planning to edit that episode until the Christmas holidays - possibly making it the first episode of 2013. We'll see...

Anyway, we had great fun filming these episodes - and will probably do further spoof cooking episodes in 2013. The Halloween episode should be available to watch next week, however until then here are some photos. These ones are camera-phone ones, but they've come out pretty well - I took a lot of others with my proper camera, which will probably make it into the finished films...

In other news, I'm heading to Salisbury later this week, where I hope to film a bit of the Christmas Special as well as catching up with family and friends... I'm also just putting the finishing touches to THIRD TIME LUCKY and am hoping that I can send off for copies by the end of the week, so that I will be able to launch that book next week, take a copy to Venice for filming purposes and be able to have some available at the show on the 16th November.

As for ARE WE THERE, YETI!?, I still have a small number of the longer stories to proof, so I don't expect this collection to be ready until the end of November now, although I intend to read a number of pieces at the Poetry Cafe show. Speaking of which, the good people of The Poetry were in touch yesterday to enquire whether I'd like to book further nights for shows in 2013. Of course, I said yes - and although I intend to keep the exact dates under my hat a little longer, I can confirm that there are dates booked for April, July, September and November. All the dates are Fridays and one of them is Friday the 13th, so I'll probably do a spooky night on that occasion! I've even considered somehow working in pre-recorded footage into one of the shows if we can get a projector - but these are very early plans and it may not be possible!

It's less than two weeks now until I head to Venice, I'll write a little more about that next week, I expect - as well as updating you on what else has been going on... One last thing I can reveal is that I intend to spend a few days around the New Year down in Dorset in the same location where I recorded the very first SHY YETI ON LOCATION episode, three years ago. There's a lot more that I never included in that area, last time - so it's going to be cool to go back! Rain or shine!!

That's about it for now...

More soon...

Yeti hugs,

Paul xx

MR YETI HAS HIS SAY... AGAIN!!!

Greetings beasties!

This week we present an interview that was recently published in THE GROWL GAZETTE, Beargrrria's top magazine. It's a bit of a review of what I've been up to recently and what is coming up over the next few months until Christmas. I hope you enjoy it! PS Next week we should have a new video to unveil, the new book of short stories and poems to discuss, including something from this collection for you to sample, not to mention my forthcoming trip to Venice.

Anyway, here we go with the interview...

MORE CHITTER-CHAT WITH BRITAIN'S SHY YETI

Here is another interview that I did recently with Beargrrria’s top magazine for chat; THE GROWL GAZETTE. They know me over there due to my dubious connection with a certain Beargrrrian superstar named Charlie Grrr. This is the fourth time that they have interviewed me in the last few years! They really MUST be short of people to interview. This time I’m speaking mainly about what the next few months hold in store and about my forthcoming collections – NOT AS SHY AS I WAS and the reissue of my third collection, THIRD TIME LUCKY. So, here’s what they asked and what I said in reply – straight from the yeti’s mouth, as it were!!!

Q. So, Paul - tell us about your latest book. Firstly, what’s it called?

A. Well, I have a new one coming out any day now called ARE WE THERE, YETI!?! , but I think we discussed that during the last time we chatted. That last book took a little longer than usual, well over a year from start to finish, partly because there were quite a few short stories in it which always take longer to proofread than my volumes where it’s just poetry. I’m currently working on a collection called NOT AS SHY AS I WAS, alongside the 10th anniversary edition of my third collection, THIRD TIME LUCKY. All the writing work for NOT AS SHY AS I WAS, which began at the start of the year, has now been completed – so I’m now entering the proofing stage. There’s a lot more poetry in that one, but all the same it won’t be out until Spring 2013, whilst the latter should be ready in time for my Poetry Café show On Friday 16th November. As of the start of October I moved onto a new project called GRRRS, PURRS AND VERSE – although this is only a provisional title at this stage.

Q. Talking of titles, where does the title NOT AS SHY AS I WAS come from?

A. I’ve had it in my head for a while now; although originally I thought this particular book would be ready in 2012 as I begun work on it late in 2011. It probably fits even better as it’ll be coming out in 2013 as one of the books that I release as I’m about to turn 40. It kind of says it all really as a play on my yeti nick-name… I’ve felt more of a change in my confidence in the last 10 years – although in many situations I’m still pretty shy, even though you might not think it. I am!

Q. So is this book all stories, more like FUNERAL FOR A SHOE? Or does it also involve poetry? How does it compare to your other recent collections?

A. It’s has both poems and stories, but if it’s like any of my previous books then it most closely resembles YETI HUGS AND OTHER HORRORS from 2010, where it is more poems than stories on this occasion. I never make a concerted decision to write one or the other – I just let the inspiration guide how the book turns out; I find it best not to force ideas and I like that my recent books have been that mixture of poems and stories. Hopefully, something for all occasions and moods!

Q. Tell us about some of your favourites from the new book - which piece or pieces are you most proud of?

A. Well, I must say that I’m really pleased to have been writing more poems again this year. Obviously I enjoy writing short stories, but I sort of feel that I have come to a natural break as far as they are concerned; although I’m sure this will change. As I say, there are still a good few stories in this collection – not to mention a couple really old ones from the late 80s, early 90s. I also had a couple of scripts and a monologue from the same time, but I think I’m going to have to hold those over for a later book as I’m running out of space in this one. It’s hard to choose a particular favourite story – although I have a soft spot for QUEEN OF THE CHRISTMAS SEASON, as it was written during a pleasant day out with my parents. I’ve already been performing a lot of the new poems from this collection – BEE-SOTTED, DRUNK ELK, EVIL IVY, AN ELEPHANT IN THE ROOM, GLAMOUR AT ALL TIMES, I’M SICK (BUT DO I WANNA BE CURED), I CLEANED OUT MY DIRTY MIND, MISTER MOSQUITO, NATIONAL TREASURE, SHAVING WEREWOLVES, SOMETHING’S UP WITH ROCKY LOBSTER, WE’RE ALL JUST BRAINS and A YETI IN A HAT to name just a few and not to mention a piece called ONCE I LOST MY HEART TO A CORNISH PASTY that I turned into a song! There’s also the piece THE WEDDING BREAKFAST which I wrote for my friend’s Glyn and David’s civil partnership – so that was also a privilege.

Q. November sees the reissue of your third collection, THIRD TIME LUCKY. Are you enjoying revisiting your old work?

A. I am very much enjoying returning to the older books, yes. It’s quite timely, because as the reissues come out I have naturally recorded pieces from them for SHY YETI ON LOCATION episodes. It also makes me consider reading pieces that I’d often forgotten. Last year I read a number of pieces from JUNK/FOOD during my Lille/Brugge videos and also at one of my shows and I did the same for ROLLERCOASTER and my episode from Bath contained poems from that collection. This time around I expect my November Poetry Café show to focus on THIRD TIME LUCKY and will probably end up reading pieces from this re-issued collection during my holiday trip to Venice over my birthday.

Q. Do you intend to keep revising your earlier collections as they reach their 10th anniversaries.

A. Definitely, yes. I certainly intend to revisit the first 8 collections up until POETIQUETTE and the next two that followed that, POEMS TO MAKE BEARS GROWL and RHYMES BEARS STEAL PIES FOR which takes me up to 2017!! I’m happier with the design of the more recent books – but maybe I won’t be by 2017 and there will be something that I can add to those later volumes in the same way as I’ve found ways of adding something to the earlier collections. I’m already working, in slow time, on all the reissued books up until POETIQUETTE, although GO 4TH AND DIVIDE isn’t due out until Summer 2013 and THE AUTUMNAL E.P. until the end of 2013. I’m not sure what will happen after that or whether by then I’ll feel that the other collections would benefit from re-designing! Let’s see nearer the time!

Q. 2012 is drawing to a close, how has it been for you overall?

A. Different from 2011, but that’s a good thing – although 2011 was a good year too, I’ve been very lucky creatively over the last few years! During 2012 we reached the 10th anniversary of my blog (www.shyyeti.com) – so it’s been a year of old and new; as well as new material I’ve been working on a number of compilations of old work. As I’ve mentioned I also have plenty of new books on the way – from new collection ARE WE THERE, YETI!?! and the scripted series THE BEAST OF FRIENDS and Mouse Of Commons collection, TALES FROM THE MCWHISKERS’ ARCHIVE. The videos seem to have really taken off too and have started getting much higher ratings than they did back in 2010 and 2011.

Q. How is the performance poetry going?

A. Good. I’ve enjoyed all the gigs that I’ve done at The Poetry Café, so far, this year and look forward to my last one in November. It was also fun to take part in the open-mike sessions in Broadstairs during the folk festival this year. I suppose I am very happy to consider myself a video poet as I enjoy making the films most of all, to be honest. It’s great to have the creative control to make something that hopefully will last – a souvenir of what I’ve been up to, if you like. Heck! Even if it’s only me who wants to watch them in the future then it’ll be nice to have them!

Q. When is your next show?

A. Friday 16th November at The Poetry Café, Covent Garden. I’m not sure if there will a theme on this occasion – I’m not even sure I’m going to work on a detailed set plan this time; might just surprise myself! As the night is around the time of the 10th anniversary of my third collection I will, off course, be reading poems from THIRD TIME LUCKY as well as some more recent ones, I’m sure. It’s quite possible that we’ll have a few more guests than normal on that night too.

Q. Will you be back on the radio this year?

A. Well, I’ve already been on a couple of times so far in 2012, but I know that Tim’s has had to cut his times on the radio right down since he became a father for the second time earlier this year; but hopefully there will be other chances in the future. I’m glad I managed to fit in four appearances in less than a year – especially as we got a number of nice videos out of the shows and recording with Tim is also fun. It was especially nice to be able to involve Dominic in the last couple of appearances too, as I think he found it interesting to see what went on down at the radio stations. Anyway, more news on future radio shows when I know more – keep an eye on www.shyyeti.com – I will announce it there first!

Q. How is the SHY YETI ON LOCATION series progressing?

A. I feel like the episodes have really hit their stride this year – especially since Dominic moved over and I have my partner in crime living with me now! Last year I really enjoyed filming the overseas episodes in Paris, Lille, Bruges and L.A., but this year even the UK episodes have been good fun to make – choosing the themes and seeing what poems fit into them… It’s also been good to finally catch up with the backlog of films that I never got around to editing last year, such as my VAMPIRE COWS SPECIAL and the “LOST” HOLLYWOOD episode. I’ve also migrated some of my original videos from 2008, which previously had only been available on Vimeo and it’s good to see those getting more views now too. I also had fun over the summer holidays recording a number of series that will keep me busy editing over the autumn and probably into early next year. These include a four part series set in the Lake District, new Sutton Park episodes – as well as those that I recorded down in Broadstairs at the Folk Festival that I have completed work on quite recently. Of course, there is more to come and I’m just back from a trip to Brussels – with another trip planned to Venice in a couple of weeks. My friend Dan Hodges and I have also been working on Shy Yeti’s first cookery episode; which seems fitting as I do write a lot about food! I’ve also started work on a series that I want to film around some of my old haunts back in my home town of Salisbury, but I see that being a bit of a back-burner project to be completed sometime next year.

Q. You mentioned filming overseas… How did Brussels go and what do you have planned for your trip to Venice? Haven’t you filmed there before?

A. Brussels was a very nice trip, although the weather started out wet, rather like when Dominic and I arrived in Dusseldorf back in April… Still, I didn’t let the rain – which lasted until late afternoon on the Saturday, stop me getting out there and filming. By the time we went to Ghent on the Sunday the weather was perfect and continued to be for the rest of the trip. In the end I filmed 9 short poems from THIRD TIME LUCKY which will be spread across the 2 episodes of SHY YETI ON LOCATION that I intend to put together from this trip. In just under a month I’m heading to Venice for my birthday where I intend to film more episodes from THIRD TIME LUCKY, this time incorporating it with a sort of spoof giallo / slasher film about Mr Shy Yeti being stalked around the city by a man who wishes to stab him with the sharp end of an ice cream cone! You think I jest!?! I’ve already recorded some of the creepy messages that the character leaves on Yeti’s phone! Oh yes, and you’re quite right – I have filmed in Venice before – and taken photos over there twice, some of which I’ve used in my poetry books and Mouse of Commons novels. On my last trip I lost all the footage that I’d recorded for an ON LOCATION episode and only managed to re-record a few minutes right at the end of the trip. This time, I promise not to let this happen!!

Q. And what of the episodes that you have already recorded this year?

A. Well, we talked about the ones that I filmed at the start of the year last time we spoke, but since then I’ve been working on a number of films under the “SHY YETI GOES WILD” banner… There are lots of them! The two on location episodes, then live on the radio, live at the Poetry Café – twice each! Since I started writing a weekly blog last autumn I have often used potential themes for the videos as a source of what I write about – this definitely happened with recent episodes I have been working on about Halloween and a little cookery episode which may not see the light of day until next year. This year I also did some episodes that sort of celebrate everything that it means to be British, as part of the Royal Diamond Jubilee Year. I’ve also done live video for all my shows this year – and there is plenty of footage left from those to include them randomly in other episodes; even one of the 20th anniversary Sutton Park episodes had one as part of events…

Q. What about next year? Are there any plans to return to The States?

A. Oh! Absolutely… Not to mention a return to both Paris and Italy and anywhere else exciting that I can manage for a long weekend… I’m hoping that I’ll be back in the States in August 2013 – as part of my 40th birthday holidays. Paws crossed that I’ll be doing a lot of travel – so hopefully I’ll get to take the viewers along too!

Q. Other than poetry and videos are there any other projects in the pipeline for the end of 2012, into 2013?

A. There are, but having just finished 3 projects all around the same time there will be a natural break before anything new comes out. I expect there to be a new collection of short Mouse Of Commons stories in 2013, the last batch that I wrote some years ago now; I’ll also be working on other Mouse projects – but these will be for release during 2014 or later. In 2013 I also celebrate my 40th birthday, so I have a lot of things that I want to achieve creatively, whether it be on the page or on video… But more about all that nearer the time.

Q. And the next collection, after NOT SO SHY AS I WAS – does this have a title yet?

A. Originally I had planned to call it, PURRS, GRRRS AND VERSE – but I think that one will go on the back-burner as I want to use another title. It rather looks as if the next book will now be called GRANNY ATE MY AFTER-BIRTH AND OTHER POEMS, as this is the title of one of my newest pieces and it’s such a repulsive and eye-catching title! I also have the title AUTHOR. POET. LIBRARIAN. YETI. – but that could simply be a sub-title for another collection.

Q. That's good news. Thank you for answering our questions, Mr Yeti.

A. That's okay, thank you for inviting me back – hopefully we’ll growl again soon. Once again, I’d just like to pass on all my thanks to every one in Beargrrria for all their support and good will over the years

So, there you have it! More soon! Yeti hugs, Paul xx

ALL THE BUSTLE OF BRUSSELS...

Hello beasties!!

So... How did Brussels go? What did you see? Did you write much? Did you film much? Did you take many, many photos - mostly of yourself?

Yes and yes and yes and yes... YES!!! However, that said, I did very little actual writing, although I am playing around on my Blackberry with a fair few new titles, first verses etc.

Anyway! Flatmate Calum and I had a great time - much filming was achieved and despite it looking like the trip was going to be a bit of a washout, it actually cleared up Saturday afternoon and was glorious on Sunday in time for our trip to Ghent. That said, I did forge ever onward during the wet parts of the trip too - recording a couple of poems in one of the parks. The weather was also more cheerful on Monday before we returned, so hopefully once edited it might actually seem quite a sunny episode. The same thing happened back in April when Dominic and I visited Dusseldorf, it rained on and off on the first day or so - but then the weather was marvellous for the whole day that we spent in Cologne!

Enough about the weather. I've a few photos to share in a moment, but I'm trying to decide whether I should keep under my hat which poems I read... Hmm... Well, perhaps I will tell you - but perhaps not quite yet, as I doubt whether these episodes will be edited until closer to Christmas as there is still quite a backlog. What I will definite say is that all the poems that I read were from the forthcoming 10th anniversary release of THIRD TIME LUCKY and that I think I read about nine of them; well, they are pretty short! There is definitely enough footage for two episodes - that said I really ought to go and back up the footage...

*dashes off*

There we are - all done! Now, as promised, I should probably share a few of the photos from the trip with you as I probably don't have a lot more to report this week...

Before I go, a little more about the illustration project between Adam M Botsford and I, which I mentioned in my last post. These illustrations are for the next collection, NOT AS SHY AS I WAS and Adam has posted versions of them on his blog.

http://adambotsford.com/post/33041460906/im-excited-to-announce-the-start-of-a-new

Next week I will hopefully have a new video to share with you and possibly even another Beargrrrian interview...

More soon!

Yeti hugs,

Paul xx
