SHY YETI MEETS MISTER SMELLIE...

SHY YETI... MEET TOPPIE!!

Hello beasties!

We're back again - for our second post of this extra-special yeti weekend!! I hope you enjoyed yesterday's post from Amsterdam... We will be back there again in a week or two as I have another yeti sketch which is mostly set there - but I'm jumping ahead here...

Another part of this special weekend involved me posting Episode 4 (the 5th episode in all) of THE SHY LIFE PODCAST... You can find it on my SHY YETI account on Soundcloud or look for me on iTunes, I should be there too! Anyway... Here's some more information about the new episode; it's the second I've released this week - don't expect this kind of treatment every week, mind!

THE SHY LIFE PODCAST - 4: ALL MANNER OF NEW VOICES...

We're BACK! Already!! It's our longest one EVER!! This time we're having trouble with our guests - but Mr Yeti does try to explain his 90s movie making pursuits... Dameus is about to make a film - there is a poem about fish and chips, a discussion on vinyl - more library gossip, some messages and a doughnut... Thanks to Nick G, Mr Trowbridge and LSF for their contributions to this episode. We'll be back again later in the month... Please email me at shyyeti@yahoo.co.uk if you have any comments. This episode and all contents are Copyright Paul Chandler, 2016. Aside from the clips, which were recorded in 1996 - episode 4 was recorded between the 17th May and the 10th June 2016.

Moving onto this post's script, I will admit that I nicked the idea of a Cat Psychic from myself - having planned a sub-plot in a future season of HOT STUFF!! involving just such a character; but that season won't be out until about 2018, so I was keen to do something sooner for one of the Shy Yeti scripts... There's no harm taking an idea and using it in two different ways - I may even end up linking the two incidents as many characters cross over in my writing.

It may not be immediately obvious, but the script itself is inspired by podcasts - more so as a listener than as a podcast producer for our sketch features a fictional cameo by a real-life podcaster. That said it's not quite as simple as a meet and greet; as already mentioned Shy meets a Cat Psychic - but he actually turns out to be somebody quite different altogether... In the same way that there is a "real-life" Shy Yeti (ie; me) and a fictional Shy Yeti - the star-guest in this episode also exists in more than one reality... Our guest-star is Toppie Smellie, who has his own podcast and who recently interviewed me for his show... They'll be more about that interview here on www.shyyeti.com once it's posted.

Toppie isn't the only podcaster who features in this script - but the others are only mentioned, at least for now. As the story develops there are mentions of Toppie's podcasting co-stars ThatPeterG, Dr Wes Stone and Brenda Boo... But let me identify some of these shows - at least one or two of which I am likely to be appearing on soon. I am hoping that Toppie will also be my first overseas guest on THE SHY LIFE PODCAST during July or August. Watch this space...

THE SMELLCAST
https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/the-smellcast/id500846681?mt-2

Start with a personal journal podcast about a 50-something gay man, mix in some current events and add a healthy dose of some very odd fantasy elements and you have Toppie Smellie’s SMELLCAST! Toppie takes you with him as he tests the boundaries of the podcasting universe. Sometimes The Smellcast is merely mind numbingly mundane — but in a pleasant sort of way. Sometimes you will find it funny — in a sort of stupid, affected wayOther times you will discover within it real pathos, human drama, whimsy, surrealism, and occasionally utter nonsense.

THE SMELLCAST! Fun! Entertaining! Mysterious!

LOTSL (Life On The S*** List):
https://itunes.apple.com/gb/podcast/lotsl/id519688017?mt=2

A revolving group of players, living the American dream but falling a bit short.

The story about how I come to be listening to so many U.S. podcasts is a simple one. It all began when I started listening to a slasher movie podcast that my friend Erik is part of...

THE HYSTERIA CONTINUES
https://itunes.apple.com/gb/podcast/the-hysteria-continues/id418884138?mt=2
I listened to this show for a number of years when one week another horror podcast was mentioned...

SCREAMQUEENZ HORROR PODCAST
https://itunes.apple.com/gb/podcast/screamqueenz-horror-podcast/id385218036?mt=2

Along the way ScreamQueenz did an episode where Toppie featured - I'm not sure what he was talking about now, but Dark Shadows was mentioned and as I'm a fan of this cult show from the 60s and 70s I began to explore the other shows that he was involved in: THE SMELLCAST and LOTSL...

As time went on I began listening to a number of other shows until I now listen to quite a few and keep trying new ones as I come across them - most notably:

COCKTAILS AND CREAMPUFFS:
https://itunes.apple.com/gb/podcast/cocktails-cream-puffs-gay/id356082238?mt=2

POD IS MY CO-PILOT:
https://itunes.apple.com/gb/podcast/pod-is-my-copilot/id218480532?mt=2

These are more personal journal/comedy/LGBT themed podcasts - but over their many episodes they have covered all manner of topics. It's a little bit like super hero comics, I imagine... You begin reading one and then the one that you're reading crosses over with another one and then you find yourself reading that one too and then before you know it you're reading about twenty different comics... Well, as I began to say earlier, I have become like that with podcasts - I imagine many other listeners have done the same. It's probably just a coincidence that I happen to have connected with more shows overseas than in the UK. I've dipped into a number - but THE HYSTERIA CONTINUES remains the only one I've listened to from the very start and even they have two members of the show who are from the States! In this particular instance that show has introduced me to a whole new area of horror films that I had only just touched the surface of - the slasher film and the proto-slashers and giallo that may have inspired them. Readers here will know that I do like to write horror stories of a sort - and so all these films just help to get me in the mood!

Anyway, moving on... It's less than a month until my next Poetry Cafe show - which is going to be a pretty busy time for me. Not only do I have the show, but I will be returning to my home town and doing a number of interviews with friends down there. I also intend to release an episode of THE SHY LIFE PODCAST from the show itself and hope to interview poet John Smallshaw about what he's been writing and how we first met.

Next time I will probably have a new prose piece for you - and the following week we'll be back in Amsterdam, although only in fictional form! Still! It's worth going back for...

That's it for now - more soon!

Yeti hugs,

Paul xx

P.S. This script was partially concocted between April and May 2016 and was actually written between Wednesday 18th and Friday 20th May 2016. I have been tinkering with it ever since, except when I was in Amsterdam - and here it is ready for you to read now... Do enjoy it, won't you!?
SHY YETI AND THE CAT PSYCHIC...

THE SETTING: Shy Yeti is at home - he really doesn't have very many plans for the evening and so is just busy counting his pie collection and taking selfies to post on social media; after all how would the world cope without those? Just then the door-bell rings and Shy goes to answer it - standing there is a rather disorientated looking gentleman who is carrying a battered brown leather brief-case. When the man speaks he reveals himself to be of American origin - he is politely pleasant and Shy admires the red top hat that he currently wears...

STRANGER: (slightly nervously)

Hello sir... Might you be Shy Yeti?

SHY: (surprised, curious)

Why, yes... May I just say what a splendid top hat that is!? I wear one just like it when I do my poetry shows... Where did you get it from?

STRANGER: (flattered, proud)

I'm actually not sure, sir - but thank you... Yes... It's most useful; also stylish... Wouldn't you say?

SHY: (amicably)

Isn't it just - I tend to keep my lunch under mine... I learnt that trick from a bear friend of mine who does the same with his marmalade sandwiches... What do you keep under yours?

STRANGER: (seemingly unsure)

Well... I... Err...

SHY: (reassuringly)

Oh! No... Don't feel you have to answer that! What a fella keeps under his hat is private to him and him alone; like a lady's handbag... So now... How can I help you, exactly?

STRANGER: (bubbly once again, full showbiz patter)

I'm a travelling salesman, sir... You don't by any chance own a cat, do you?

SHY: (slightly surprised)

A cat? Own one, you say? I don't think it's legal to actually OWN a cat any more, is it? I have co-habited with one before now and I certainly have many cat friends - but I don't OWN one! What do you take me for - some kind of illegal cat kidnapper? I'm no feline hostage-taker - I can assure you of that!

STRANGER: (concerned, petering out)

Oh no! I'm so sorry... I really didn't mean to offend, nor suggest...

SHY: (trying to sound interested)

No offense taken... So what exactly are you selling? Hats for cats, is it? I know cats are very keen on hats - and scarfs, for that matter...

STRANGER: (almost sounding embarrassed)

As it happens, I'm actually a cat psychic...

SHY: (surprised)

A cat WHAT?

STRANGER: (becoming a bit more confident)

A cat psychic! I read the paw palms of cats - so that I can tell them their fortunes...

SHY: (remaining composed)

Really! How unusual... Only cats? No other types of animal?

STRANGER: (muttering to self)

I did try to read a dog's paw once but he slobbered on me... He surprised me and I shrieked, then he ran away and wouldn't come out from under the bed for almost two weeks...I wouldn't have minded but he kept farting... It was my bed, you see... I had to go and sleep on the sofa...

SHY: (nodding kindly)

Oh! Good grief... How unfortunate... How horrible! Well now, I must say I'm terribly intrigued by all of this... I really wish that I had a cat so that you could show me how this all works...

STRANGER: (brightening)

Well, as it happens I do actually have a test cat on my person... Would you like to see?

SHY: (a little worried)

Yes! Too right... A cat? On your person? Where is it? In that brief-case of yours?

STRANGER: (beaming)

Oh no, sir... (he lifts his hat to reveal a rather large ginger Tom) This is my friend, Tolstoy...

SHY: (distracted)

Oh! Well, how marvellous... He's a big one, for sure! (growing more excited) Now, just a minute... You can't go reading the paws of cats that you're already familiar with - I mean, presumably you already know his life story...

STRANGER: (not sounding too convincing)

Oh no, sir... Not at all... I can assure you that Tolstoy and I have never met prior to this particular encounter...

SHY: (in disbelief)

Oh, come off it... Really? But he's living under your hat?!

STRANGER: (floundering for words)

Oh yes... I know that, but we rarely speak - in fact never ever... He likes to keep himself to himself...

SHY: (attempting to get a reasonable reply)

Are you sure? (turning to the cat) Tolstoy? What's going on here? What do you say to all this?

TOLSTOY: (indignantly)

MEOW!!

SHY: (reasonably at first, but more sternly to the stranger)

Well, okay... If that's what you claim then I trust you! You have honest eyes... It's just this guy I'm not sure about - I don't even know his name... I'm sorry... What exactly IS your name, sir?

STRANGER: (looking ashamed)

This is awfully embarrassing - you'll never believe this - but I really don't know...  It's becoming a little awkward if I'm being honest with you!

SHY: (not believing him)

Oh, very funny... Now listen...

STRANGER: (hurriedly attempting to change the subject)

It's no matter! I don't care what you think - but it's true! Anyway, I'm afraid I must ask for silence... I am about to begin the reading...

SHY: (distracted, apologetic)

Oh.. Oh! I'm terribly sorry... Yes, please - do go on...

STRANGER: (turning to his cat companion who is now sat before him on the hallway table)

If you'd be so kind to offer your paw... (Tolstoy does so) Thank you... Now let me see... Turn it so that I can see the pads... (Tolstoy does this too) Thank you... Ah yes! You have a very long purr-line here... And... What is that, actually? Is it a mole? Oh no, it's a piece of dried tuna... Let me just pick that off for you... These things can interfere with the reading...

SHY: (mocking)

Wouldn't it be awful if you predicted the wrong thing because of a bit of dry food getting in the way...

STRANGER: (beginning to lose his temper)

Well yes... Actually it would! A bit of dried tuna can obscure the purr-line... That could cut five years off this poor cat's life...

SHY: (correcting him)

I don't think it works that way - all it does is mean that your reading is incorrect...

TOLSTOY: (crossly)

MEOW!! MEEEEEEEOOOOOWOOOOWOOOOW!!

STRANGER: (crisply, defensive)

Yes! Thank you, Tolstoy... I agree... My friend here asks that you're quiet, Mr Yeti... We are trying to concentrate... May I remind you that this is about him, not you!

SHY: (growing increasingly sarcastically)

I'm terribly sorry... Do go on!

STRANGER: (disorientated)

Thank you... Now where was I? I'm a little dizzy - oh, no - that's better - my glasses weren't on straight... (his voice changes to a dreamy tone) Right... Okay.. .Yes! Now, I do believe that I'm beginning to receive a message for you...

SHY: (straight-faced)

You're communing with the dead now too? Now I'm really feeling confused... What are you? Paw-palm reader? Psychic? Mystic? Clairvoyant?

STRANGER: (flustered, sad, trying to remain positive)

Oh... A bit of everything... I like to mix it up...

SHY: (playing along)

Clearly! My friend Fatima can be a bit like that - but she only does people; it's probably simpler...

STRANGER: (trying to shift the conversation on)

Really... How fascinating! But shhh now - but I am trying to focus here, thank you...

SHY:

Careful who you shhh, Mr... I was taught shhhing by bona-fide librarians...

TOLSTOY: (the stranger doesn't seem to hear, but Tolstoy suddenly pipes up...)

MEOW! MEOW! *PURR*

STRANGER: (trying to sound more stern and mysterious)

Well, exactly... Anyway... Let me see... As I was saying... I have a message here for you... I think it's from your Auntie Pussels - she says MEOW - MEOW - MEW - MEW - HISS!!!

TOLSTOY: (cattily)

MEW! MEW! PURR! PURRRRRRRRRRRRR!!

STRANGER: (nodding in agreement)

Yes... Yes... I think that probably is the case... I wouldn't think about it too much - just lashing out... It's nothing to do with you - she's just in a cruel mood today...

SHY: (losing patience)

Listen, sir... Can we stop? I'm simply not believing any of what you are saying... I'm really not sure what you're doing here or what you're trying to get out of me... Let me just tell you - it won't work!

STRANGER: (trying to remain positive)

If it's a problem then why don't you leave?

SHY: (exasperated)

Because you're standing in MY  hallway...

STRANGER: (suddenly sounding deflated, but trying to stay upbeat)

Oh yes - so I am... Well, we're done anyway... Thank you, Tolstoy... (Tolstoy is purring contentedly) Look! Look! See how happy I've made him... It does work - I told you I was good...

SHY: (losing patience, trying not to shout)

This is just nonsense! NONSENSE! Will you please explain why you're here or simply just leave... PLEASE!?

STRANGER: (quite upset)

Okay! Okay! I really do apologise... You see, I haven't been honest with you about why I'm here... This is going to sound very odd - but as I was trying to explain earlier I've lost my memory... (Shy looks unconvinced) I know you don't believe me - but it's true... I'm not kidding you...

SHY: (sympathetic, but confused)

Okay, well how awful... I'm really sorry to hear that; but I'm not sure what I can do about it... Shouldn't you go to a hospital or something? I have the name of a good doctor - Doctor Magda... He even gives assistance to fruit and vegetables - that's how forward thinking he is...

STRANGER: (sounding more in control)

Well, sure... And thank you for your suggestions - but can I just show you something first!?

SHY: (alarmed/excited)

Oh... Goodness! Well, yes... Of course you can! Go ahead...

THE STRANGER TAKES A BOOK FROM HIS COAT-POCKET - IT IS ONE OF SHY YETI'S OWN POETRY COLLECTIONS, "A YETI WAY OF THINKING" WHICH HASN'T BEEN AVAILABLE FOR THAT LONG - THIS PEAKS SHY'S INTEREST AS IT INVOLVES HIM DIRECTLY...

STRANGER: (hopeful)

It's a signed copy... Only I can't make out the inscription... I'm just wondering, do you think we've met before, perhaps? Would that be possible?

SHY: (becoming keener to help)

I'm not sure... The more I think of it - I'm beginning to think that I recognise your face; I just can't place it... I don't think we've met - but - I wonder... It's possible that I've seen a photo of you somewhere... I do have a fair few friends in the States through podcasting...

STRANGER: (trying to figure it out)

But you don't think we've met before? I don't understand... How can that be if this book has been signed to me? How come that I have it? Would I have bought it in a shop in the States, do you think? To be honest I don't even know how I even got here - to this country, I mean! I don't have my passport or anything; but I'm clearly not British...

SHY: (talking half to himself)

That doesn't automatically make you an illegal alien - you could be American, but still live here, maybe... I don't know! I'm not sure I have the answer to that... I do know that my books are really only available online or at my shows... The only other way would be if I'd sent you the copy personally...

STRANGER: (growing more encouraged)

You mean, if I was an online friend that lives overseas, say - one that you'd never actually met?

SHY: (becoming fascinated)

That would be a possibility... Even when I speak to friends online we don't always speak face to face - voice to voice is usually enough... And that's the thing... Gosh... Your voice is so familiar to me now that we're talking like this... (his eyes have been closed for the last minute, but he now opens them...) Would you mind if I look at the inscription - I may be able to work it out... It is my writing after all...

STRANGER: (almost too excited)

Why yes... Sure... Here you are...

SHY: (checking the copy closely)

Well, that's definitely me... I wish I could make out what I've written here... Could it be Tommy? Tammy? Tappy? Just a minute... I'm pretty sure that this says... Could it be Toppie!?

STRANGER: (mystified)

That's a funny name...

SHY: (becoming over-enthused)

I think it's your name - at least the name you use online... Toppie! Toppie Smellie! That's why I recognise your voice... Toppie Smellie - the legendary podcaster from The Smellcast and Life On The Shit List... Um... Let me think...Who else do you know that I know? These names should mean something to you! Think now.. What about Brenda? Karmel? Same person... Different names... Long story!

TOPPIE: (lost)

I can't keep up with all this - what am I meant to be thinking about? Nothing's coming back...

SHY: (growing frustrated)

Stay calm... Let these name settle in and maybe you will start remembering... Let me think... More names! Who else? Karmel... Said her already... Err... ThatPeterG... Dr Wes Stone... They're all on the show with you! Come on! Are you getting nothing at all? You do your own show too... The Smellcast... Pickle Hollow! Where do I start with that one?! Oh, my goodness, Toppie! I'm a big fan! You interviewed me for your show not long ago and I sent you my latest page-turner... This one!! It ALL makes sense now!

TOPPIE: (finally allowing himself a grin)

Goodness gracious! Well, that really is, quite literally, a turn-up for the books... Ha! So is this the first time that we've met in person?

SHY: (concerned, confused, baffled)

Yes, indeed! Well, you're usually all the way over there in the States - not here in London... I have family over there - but I don't get to see them very often... It's quite a mystery, isn't it? How on earth did you end up here in London with no memory and just my book for company... It's too coincidental... Somebody has engineered this... I hoped we'd meet one day, but not like this...

TOPPIE: (cross with life)

I know! But believe me - it's a lot worse for me... I need answers! I really need your help, Shy...

SHY: (lowering his voice, curious)

Well, okay... Sure... One thing though... May I ask? This who Cat Psychic business? WHY!?!

TOPPIE: (defensively)

I know it's odd, Shy - but I'm just trying to pay my way until I know who I am - until I can go home... It's all been pretty upsetting, I'll have you know...

SHY: (not wishing to sound insulting, but...)

I don't doubt it, for one minute... But... Well... Does Cat Psychic work pay well?

TOPPIE: (visibly nervous)

Not especially - Tolstoy takes a 75% cut for a start... He's the brains behind all this - or maybe the brawn - one or the other - his claws are pretty sharp I can tell you that... When we're on the Underground he digs his claws into my head... It's painful! (whispers) He's quite the bully; little tin-pot Hitler, he is...

SHY: (staring crossly at Tolstoy)

Is that all true! That's outrageous - taking advantage of a poor gentleman who has lost his memory...

TOLSTOY: (rearing up on his hind paws - pushing his ears right back)

MEW! MEW! HISS! HISSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!

SHY: (standing up to the grumpy cat)

...And we'll have none of that... Thank you!!

TOLSTOY HISSES AGAIN - AND JUST AT THAT MOMENT THE PHONE STARTS TO RING...

(reassuringly) Just stay where you are, Toppie and I'll help in what ever way I can to get you back - even if I have to pay for you to go back myself...

TOPPIE IS STILL IN A BIT OF A FLUSTER, BUT NOW SIGHS AND NODS, RELAXING AS SHY YETI HEADS TO ANSWER THE PHONE, WHICH IS IN THE LOUNGE...

(short-temperedly) Hello!? HELLO! Who is that? This is the Shy Yeti residence... HELLO!?!

THERE IS NO REPLY AND THE CALL BREAKS - SHY PUTS THE PHONE DOWN AND HEADS BACK TO THE HALLWAY AND IS SURPRISED TO SEE NO SIGN OF EITHER TOPPIE OR TOLSTOY, WITH ONLY THE RED TOP HAT LEFT SITTING ALONE ON THE HALL TABLE...

(confused) MR SMELLIE? TOPPIE!?! HELLO!? WHERE DID YOU GET TO? HELLO!?

BUT THERE IS NO REPLY...

TO BE CONTINUED AT A LATER DATE...

THAT SHY YETI FELLA IS BACK AGAIN...

AN APPLE FOR SHY YETI!!

Hello beasties!

This week Shy Yeti looks at diets and healthy eating, but not without a fight! I took the photos for this post back in March, I think - when I first decided to write a collection of yeti scripts and when I was visiting St George's hospital on a daily basis as part of getting my leg problems sorted.

I'm just back from a week in Amsterdam and I wouldn't exactly say that it was the healthiest of trips a) we did have a few nice meals and b) I got food-poisoning and/or a stomach bug! On the other hand - when I wasn't laid up in my bed back at the hotel - we did, at least, get out and about and I was probably moving around more than I would have been during your typical week at work when I'm only pottering about the library or sat behind the enquiry desk most of the time. Oh, and due to being ill I barely ate for 48 hours - so I MUST have lost some weight. Still, it's not recommended...

Anyway - in this week's sketch "Shy Yeti"'s attempts at healthy living don't quite go to plan... You know what fruit and vegetables can be like! It's never plain sailing...

Before we move on - I posted the 2nd full-length episode of THE SHY LIFE PODCAST just before we left for Amsterdam, the third in all including the pilot. Here is some more information on that:

THE SHY LIFE PODCAST - 2: LIBRARIES OF ALL SHAPES AND SIZES...
https://soundcloud.com/shyyeti/the-shy-life-podcast-2-libraries-of-all-shapes-and-sizes

In this, our second full-length episode of THE SHY LIFE PODCAST, Mr Yeti returns to the location of one of his first full time jobs - which he began 20 years ago this year! His mum is also on hand to share stories of her library days... We also delve into listener's letters, hear this episode's poem, reacquaint ourselves with Dameus Twinklehorn and have a little chat about some second-hand vinyl... I wasn't expecting this episode to be posted so soon - but as I'm now away for a week. Episode 3 probably won't arrive until the middle of June. This episode was recorded between the 21st and the 26th May 2016 - all contents are Copyright Paul Chandler, 2016.

Next week I'll be sharing with you the first of a couple of posts from Amsterdam - leading up to my Poetry CafĂ© show at the start of July... I'm not sure, yet, how often I'll post this month, once or twice weekly during July - but it'll certainly be all go!

More soon!

Yeti hugs,

Paul xx

P.S. This sketch was devised during late March and early April, but was written between the 16th and 17th May 2016 - the formatting was completed on Friday 27th May 2016 and it was posted... well, today!

SHY YETI EATS HEALTHILY...

In which Shy Yeti considers reducing his diet only to receive insults from the vegetables that he is intending on eating...

SETTING THE SCENE: Shy Yeti is discussing a new diet with Dr Magda. He is a busy yeti and it is not always easy to eat healthily when you are on the move all the time - but Dr M thinks he has the answer for Mr Yeti and is sharing his theories...

DR MAGDA: (sternly)

Well, first of all you need to cut down on the pies... Seven pies for breakfast is just too many!

SHY: (a little defensively)

But I have cut down! I used to eat ten!

DR M: (even sterner than before)

Yes... Well, that was DEFINITELY too much - but so is seven! You need to cut down further... You simply mustn't eat more than four pies per meal - and I'd prefer it if that number was only three, to be honest with you; but let's see how you go dropping down to four to begin with...

SHY: (earnestly)

Well, I can assure you doctor that I'll do my very best... I do have a small sponsorship deal with a pie-making firm; but I'm sure as long as I eat some pies a day then they'll still be happy for me to represent them...

DR M: (slightly kinder in tone)

Some pies will be fine... Come back in a month and we'll discuss your progress... Make an appointment with my receptionist on the way out, please...

SHY:

Of course... Thank you again, doctor...

SHY HEADS OUT OF THE DOCTOR'S OFFICE - CARRYING A GREAT WADGE OF PROMOTIONAL MATERIAL THAT DR MAGDA HAS GIVEN HIM... TIME PASSES AND BACK AT HIS OWN FLAT SHY YETI IS ASSEMBLING ALL THE INGREDIENTS TO MAKE HIMSELF A HEALTHY SALAD - ONLY IT WOULD APPEAR THAT NOT EVERYONE IS HAPPY WITH THIS PLAN...

VOICE: (giggles)

Oh... Here we go... Let's see how long THIS lasts...

OTHER VOICE: (mocking)

He's been to the doctor - promised to eat healthier... How long's he going to keep this going? I gave it a week!

FIRST VOICE: (joining in)

Ha! I give it a day - at best!

OTHER VOICE: (sneering)

Haha! You're right... Well, he's not going to eat me in a hurry - he hates pears...

FIRST VOICE: (chipping in quickly)

Well, I'm all bruised, so he won't touch me either...

OTHER VOICE: (snapping back)

I wouldn't be so sure... Sometimes he likes to chop a ripe banana up and spread it on toast like butter before piling on some marmalade...

FIRST VOICE: (outraged)

Oh! You bitch... Don't be so cruel... How could you say such a thing?

OTHER VOICE: (snootily)

I speak as I find... I had a neighbour who was one of your lot and that's exactly the kind of thing that happened to him...

THIRD VOICE: (furiously)

Why don't you just shut your yap - for all we know he's going to chuck us all in a blender and turn us into a smoothie!

FIRST VOICE:

HOW DARE YOU!!

OTHER VOICE:

THE VERY THOUGHT! A BLENDER!?! NO, NEVER...

SHY STOPS WHAT HE IS DOING AND LOOKS AROUND AND IS SURPRISED TO DISCOVER THAT, AS HE SUSPECTED, THE FRUIT IN HIS FRUIT BOWL IS BAD MOUTHING HIM AND COMMENTING RATHER SARCASTICALLY ON ALL OF HIS ACTIONS...

SHY: (sternly)

Excuse me... I'm trying to prepare my dinner here... I'm finding it very off putting to have you lot sitting there nattering in my face...

BANANA 1: (mutters)

Oh! 'Ark at him... Now the yeti thinks we're talking too loud... When will his egotism ever end?

PEAR: (equally as mutter-y)

No time soon from what I can tell! It's not bad enough that he intends to eat us but now he wants us to shut up about it!

BANANA 2: (not bothering to talk quietly)

The cheek of the man!

SHY: (crossly)

Hey! Hey! I don't think this is very fair! As you pointed out not moments before - all three of you are battered and bruised... If I don't eat you then you're just going to rot... Is that what you want?

BANANA 1: (shocked)

Shhhush now...

BANANA 2: (disgusted)

He's a heartless one, isn't he?

PEAR: (goading them on)

Put your head-phones on and turn up the volume... That'll learn him...

SHY: (shaking his head and trying to ignore them)

You bunch are just nuts...

IN UNISON: (joining in protest)

We're SO not! The nuts are in that other bowl in the lounge... That's right! Yes! That's definitely right!

SHY: (under his breath)

So, are vegetables are pedantic as this or just you fruits?

IN UNISON:

Ooooh! How dare he!? Isn't he horrible!? We heard that, you know!

SHY:

Don't tell me... You all need an spot of therapy to get over all I've put you through!?!

IN UNISON:

Yes! Yes, we do! Too right... Show us some respect!

SHY: (talking to self)

Eating healthily should be easier than this... Well, shouldn't it? This is ridiculous!

TIMES PASSES... SHY FINDS HIMSELF BACK IN DR MAGDA'S OFFICE RATHER SOON THAN EXPECTED - THIS TIME HE IS ACCOMPANIED BY THE CONTENTS OF HIS FRUIT BOWL, WHO ARE, BY NOW, REALLY BEGINNING TO LOOK WORSE FOR WEAR, ALTHOUGH THEY'VE ALL USED MAKE-UP TO TRY AND MAKE IT LOOK LIKE THEY'RE STILL FRESH AND JUICY...

DR M: (politely, confidently)

So... It's very nice to see you all here - what exactly can I do to help?

BANANA 1: (furiously)

Well - I'm going to be quite blunt about this but we are all here because we object to what you told this yeti about healthy eating...

BANANA 2: (chipping in)

He's right... It's very offensive to us...

PEAR: (through gritted teeth)

You've only gone and told him to cut down on the pies and so now he's eating lots of fruit... That's US if you hadn't noticed!

DR M: (delicately)

Well, yes... That's true - and I realise that you will have quite a personal take on this issue... But you really must admit that it's a lot more healthy to eat...

BANANA 1: (losing his mind over this whole issue)

FRUIT!! FRUIT!! Well, it's NOT more healthy for us!!

SHY: (frustrated)

But you have to go sometime... I don't know if you've noticed - but you ARE fruit and you ARE going to rot...

BANANA 2: (pedantically)

So you say.. But if you will insist on eating us then how are we ever going to know that!?

PEAR: (chipping in)

It's hardly fair...

SHY: (losing his temper, making a bit of a personal attack)

Nobody even LIKES pears - you'll never get eaten!

THE TWO BANANAS MAKE A SHARP INTAKE OF BREATH AND EVEN DR M FROWNS...

DR M: (disapproving)

Now! Now! There's no need to be mean...

PEAR: (defiantly, but still upset)

Thank you, doctor... I'll have you know that people do like pears - especially in pear and almond tart...

BANANA 1: (sounding a little superior)

That's not quite the same, honey... That's cooked pear - people will eat us raw... Preferably so, really...

BANANA 2: (interrupting)

Dressed in vanilla ice cream with a cherry on top! They'll have us a fritter though, with syrup drizzled all over us...

SHY: (confused)

I thought we were here to discuss why me chopping fruit and vegetables upsets you - but now you're boasting about how people prefer to eat you...

DR M: (in agreement)

I do agree with Mr Yeti... It is rather sending out mixed messages!

SHY: (turning to Dr M and lowering his tone slightly)

There's clearly some kind of rivalry going on here... I have no idea why they're sulking about this so much - when they saw me I was making a salad - I wasn't doing anything with fruit...

PEAR: (snapping)

You were chopping tomatoes... They're fruit...

SHY: (eagerly disagreeing)

They're vegetables!

DR M: (slightly awkwardly)

They are ACTUALLY a fruit - fair enough; although it's an easy mistake to make...

SHY HAS BEGUN TYPING ON HIS PHONE - HE PAUSES, SURPRISED...

SHY: (attempting to sound calmer)

Okay... I guess I didn't know that... I probably should have done... All the same, Dr - I'm really not sure what I'm meant to do and what I'm not meant to do... As was pointed out earlier all these fruit are going to rot eventually anyway...

BANANA 1: (solemnly)

More fruit get used far too early in their lives - there is still time for them to volunteer for charity work or to help old cucumbers cross the road...

BANANA 2: (boldly)

We think fruit should only be eaten when we've totally turned to pulp...

PEAR: (slightly disagreeing)

Even then I think it's cruel... Our pips should be saved and used to grow new fruits...

DR M: (nodding sagely)

Okay... Well, I understand how you might feel that way - but is it workable...

THERE IS NO REPLY FROM ANY OF THE FRUIT AND SO SHY JUMPS IN WITH A QUESTION...

SHY: (coolly)

If I was sitting here talking about eating cucumbers or cabbages or peas in their pods, then what would you say? Would you care?

BANANA 1: (hypocritically)

Oh... No... That would be fine...

BANANA 2: (equally so)

No problem...

PEAR: (lowering voice)

Most of them deserve it - they probably even like being eaten - cucumbers can be a tad kinky, you know...

SHY: (impatiently)

Hmmm... Doctor... This is what I was trying to explain... Can you see the problem I'm having here?

DR M: (crossly)

Yes... Yes, I do indeed... Now listen you lot - this has got to stop...

BUT AT THAT MOMENT THERE COMES A KNOCK ON THE DOOR AND DOCTOR MAGDA'S SECRETARY ENTERS, NEARLY CRUSHED BY A CAVALCADE OF ANGRY VEGETABLES!

SECRETARY: (close to tears)

DR! DR! I'm terribly sorry.. I JUST couldn't stop them...

DR M: (out-raged)

Well, really! Really... This is most impertinent! I'm in the middle of a private session with my patients here!

POTATOES: (chanting)

WE DON'T CARE!! WE DON'T CARE!! THE REBELLION BEGINS HERE!!

COURGETTES: (also chanting)

KEEP RIGHTS FOR VEGGIES ON THE TABLE!!

BRUSSEL SPROUTS: (joining in)

WHAT DO WE WANT!? CUDDLES!! WHEN DO WE WANT THEM? NOW!!!

DR M: (bubbling over)

PLEASE!! THIS IS MOST UNCONVENTIONAL...

BEFORE ANYTHING MORE CAN BE SAID A LARGE BEEF-STEAK TOMATO COMES SHUFFLING INTO THE ROOM AND ALL THE VEGETABLES, EVEN THE FRUIT MOVE BACK IN RESPECT AND A GANG OF RUNNER BEANS CAN EVEN BE SEEN BOWING...

SHY: (feeling like he might need to pull some fur out in frustration)

What on earth is going on NOW!?

BANANA 1: (in awe)

Shhh now... It's the tomato king!

BANANA 2: (through clenched teeth - do bananas have teeth!?!)

Why aren't you both bowing!?

PEAR: (shocked)

You'll both be in such trouble!!

THE VEGETABLES JUST MUMBLE A LOT - CLEARLY THEY ARE NOT THE DEEPEST OF THINKERS COMPARED TO THE FRUITS - DR M IS CLEARLY QUITE TAKEN ABACK...

DR M: (mutters under his breath)

THIS IS QUITE OUT OF ORDER...

TOMATO KING: (sounding quite dignified)

ARE YOU THE PRINCE OF THE PEOPLE, DR M??

DR M: (growing suddenly nervous)

Not me, no... HIM!! (he points to Shy)

SHY: (defensively)

HEY! I'm just your common and garden yeti - I'm nobody special...

BANANA 1: (surprised)

That's the first time I've ever heard him say that about himself...

BANANA 2: (also surprised)

Yeah! Too true!!

SHY: (grumpy now - so just playing along!)

Will you stop bitching away like that - okay, yes... I'm the king of the humans! How can I help you Tomato King?

TOMATO KING: (booming grandly... not to mention rather pretentiously)

I HAVE COME HERE TO DEMAND THAT YOU MARRY MY DAUGHTER!

SHY: (taken aback)

I beg your pardon!?

TOMATO KING: (beginning to lose his temper and then sneezing)

I WANT YOU TO MARRY MY... *AAAAAAAAATISSSSSSHOOOOOOOO*

DR M: (clearly surprised to meet a tomato with a cold)

Good grief... That's a nasty cold...

TOMATO KING: (rudely)

WHAT DOES IT MATTER TO YOU, FOUR EYES...

SHY: (disapproving)

HEY! That's not very nice - this gentleman is a doctor... He can possibly help with your cold...

TOMATO KING: (his booming voice dropping to a more natural level)

Can you? Really!?

DR M: (confident, hiding his confusion)

Sure... Sure... I'm sure I could do something...

SHY: (grits teeth, interrupting)

Does it involve a blender?

DR M: (trying not to snap)

Shhh, now... (turning back to the King) Might I ask you some family questions, sir? Please, take a seat...

TOMATO KING: (thankful)

Yes... Err... Why, thank you...

BANANA 1: (chipping in)

Can you do anything for bruised fruit?

BANANA 2: (giggling)

I have a bad case of stalk envy...

PEAR: (deliberately silly)

I have a question... How can I be a pear when there is only one of me...

DR M: (finally taking control)

Now! Now! I'll get to all of you - but I can only deal with one fruit-stroke-vegetable at a time... Please, if you would like to form a queue!

COURGETTES: (still chanting)

KEEP RIGHTS FOR VEGGIES ON THE TABLE!!

BRUSSEL SPROUTS: (also still chanting, quite inanely)

WHAT DO WE WANT!? HOT CHOCOLATE WITH MARSHMALLOWS!! WHEN DO WE WANT THEM? NOW!!!

SHY  YETI TURNS TAIL AND MAKES HURRIEDLY FOR THE DOOR - HE IS HUNGRY BUT ALREADY HAS VERY MIXED THOUGHTS ABOUT WHAT HE SHOULD BE EATING - BUT AT LEAST HE'S NOT BEING BAMBOOZLED BY ANNOYING FRUIT AND VEGETABLES... TIME PASSES AND WE SEE MR YETI BACK HOME - RELAXING IN THE GARDEN... HE APPEARS TO BE DINING ON ICE POPS AND HAS HIS EAR-PHONES ON - MEANING THAT HE CAN'T HEAR THE TREES, THE FLOWERS, THE GRASS, THE INSECTS AND THE BIRDS YAMMERING ON AT HIM... HE IS CONTENT... A BIRD TRIES TO POOP ON HIM AND HE QUICKLY COVERS HIMSELF WITH A PARASOL - ALL IS WELL...

"I'M SURE I'VE SEEN THAT YETI SOMEWHERE BEFORE!"

SHY YETI GETS RECOGNISED...

Hello beasties!

Yes, this week it's another sketch featuring Shy Yeti! This week he gets recognised by a fan... Or at least he presumes it's a fan... Read on to discover what exactly happens! This piece was written between the 28th April and 3rd May 2016, although I came up with the idea earlier that same month. It will be included in the forthcoming A SHY YETI SKETCH-BOOK which I am currently working towards putting together.

Oh - but before I say any more I should just say that I have unexpectedly (to myself as much as anyone else) released the pilot episode of my new podcast - THE SHY LIFE PODCAST... Here's some more information...

This is the pilot episode for my forthcoming THE SHY LIFE PODCAST which I hope to start posting regularly later in the summer. This is a shorter episode, with no guests - but it does give you an idea of some of the silliness that will be involved. In this pilot episode you will find some daft secrets about libraries - a poem from my latest E.P. (THE KISS-ME-QUICK E.P. available from Bandcamp) and also some musings from legendary actor Dameus Twinklehorn about his appearances in a number of horror films in the late 1960s. Hopefully I will return soon with a full-length episode and future installments will be available on various hosts to download. This episode was recorded between Saturday 14th and Monday 16th May 2016. Please email me at shyyeti@yahoo.co.uk if you have any comments. This episode and all contents are Copyright Paul Chandler, 2016.

Next time I have another short story to share with you, which is appropriately themed towards the end of the month. It'll be my last post before I head off to Amsterdam where I intend to write a number of new pieces which I will post during June; I may also record a few little films to accompany a future project - but I won't say any more about that for now.

Enjoy the new Yeti sketch - and also that new podcast - more soon!

Yeti hugs,

Paul xx

SHY YETI GETS RECOGNISED...

SETTING THE SCENE:

Shy Yeti is out and about... In his poor little head he is far more famous than he actually is (which is not at all!), but that comes from too much hanging out with egotistical bears like Charlie Grrr and his yeti friend, Simon - but even then Charlie is a celebrated actor and singer in his own country and Simon has presented a few TV shows. Shy has only really ever written a few poems and hung around at parties - but there you go... Anyway! So, he is out and about when he hears somebody calling out...

VOICE: (shouting)

OI! YOU! FATSO...

SHY YETI LOOKS AROUND, WONDERING WHO IS BEING SHOUTED AT, BUT SEES NOBODY ELSE AROUND... NEXT SHY WONDERS WHO IS SPEAKING – BUT THEN, SUDDENLY, HE NOTICES A RATHER SMALL GUINEA PIG GENTLEMAN...

SHY: (somewhat reluctant)

Yes... Can I help?

GUINEA-PIG: (grumpily, suspicious, slightly curious)

The name's Wallow... Bertram Wallow... You're well-known, ain't you?

SHY: (impatient)

Well, I'm not Charlie Grrr if that's what you're thinking...

WALLOW: (scoffing slightly)

Of course you're not... You're not a bear, are you - and if you were Charlie Grrr you'd hardly be walking about on a pavement on your own, now would you?

SHY: (a little put out)

I'm not sure what you mean...

WALLOW: (matter-of-factly)

Well, a class act like Mr Grrr must have servants and minders and chauffeur-driven limousines... He wouldn’t be seen dead out here in the wilderness, alone…

SHY: (pausing for a moment - then nodding in agreement)

I suppose he does occasionally have people that ferry him about the place...

WALLOW: (scoffing again)

And what would you know about it?

SHY: (defensively)

Well, I do know him...

WALLOW: (surprised, but cocky)

Ha! Really? Well, you may do - but you're not famous...

SHY: (confused)

But I thought you just said that I was well known!?

WALLOW: (rather harshly)

Well known's not the same as famous... You're well known because people know you - you're a hanger on - a face at every party! It's a wonder that bear puts up with you following him about everywhere; Simon Yeti - a talent at nothing but showing up!

SHY: (slightly relieved)

Oh! Well, I'm terribly sorry to let you down - but I'm NOT actually Simon Yeti...

WALLOW: (surprised again, also confused)

You're NOT!? You look like him...

SHY: (trying to remain calm)

Ah, Well... I have been told that before - but that's just because we're both yeti... Anyway, he's somebody different... I do know him - actually he and Charlie are genuinely very good friends...

WALLOW: (pompously, dismissive)

Bah!

SHY: (insistently)

No... It's true... Simon used to be on telly in this country quite a lot ten or fifteen years ago - in fact he helped Mr Grrr develop his career over here away from Beargrrria...

WALLOW: (disinterested)

I don't know anything about any of that, mate...

SHY: (almost proudly)

They once built a time-machine together... It worked too - or so I've heard...

WALLOW: (chuckling)

Funny man... Are you sure you're not Simon Yeti?

SHY: (trying not to get cross)

Really! I'm not! Here... See... (he flashes his bus pass at the grumpy guinea pig)

WALLOW: (vague)

Fair enough... So who are you again if you're not Simon Yeti?

SHY: (beginning to sound impatient)

Didn't you read it? My name was on my bus pass... I'm Shy... Shy Yeti...

WALLOW: (dismissive)

Oh, sorry... That was a name, was it? Sorry - I thought it was a description of your mental health, your marital status - or something... Should I have heard of you?

SHY: (slightly sadly)

Not necessarily...

WALLOW: (outrageously rude)

Do you perform? Juggle? Tap-dance perhaps? Actually no - I can't imagine you tap-dancing – you'd fall off and do yourself a mischief; that's if the table didn't collapse first!

SHY: (flustered, slightly boastful)

Well, REALLY! I'll have you know that I'm a poet... I'm an actor too - on occasion... I've written articles - once I even auditioned for the Eurovision Song-contest only I shattered the camera lens...

WALLOW: (thinking it over, sounding thoughtful)

Fascinating! Actually, now I think about it that your name does ring a bell... Let me just google you... Actually no... Better still...

MR WALLOW TAKES HIS PHONE OUT AND MAKES A CALL - SHY LOOKS QUITE SHOCKED AND WONDERS IF HE SHOULD WALK AWAY; BY NOW MR WALLOW IS TALKING TO SOMEBODY WHO HE APPEARS TO KNOW VERY WELL...

I’m sorry – I’ve forgotten… Don’t worry! He’s here – I’ll just ask him… (he turns away from the phone to ask Shy a question) What did you say your name was again, Mr?

SHY: (through gritted teeth, trying very hard not to shout)

SHY YETI...

WALLOW: (calmly)

Oh yeah... I remember now... I'm just ringing me sister...

SHY:

But why?

WALLOW: (enthusiastically)

If anyone's heard of you she will have... She reads all the magazines... Spends most of her free-time down the local library warming her hands over the photo-copier...

SHY:

She doesn't work?

WALLOW: (chuckles)

Oh yes... She's the librarian there - but she refuses to have the heating on; cuts into the book budget, you see...

SHY:

Oh! I trained to be a librarian... Year ago now... I recently learnt all about shhh-ing... (peters off, as his companion is clearly not listening)

WALLOW: (talking on the phone, sounding quite chirpy)

Hey! Daphers... It's me... What do you mean, who? It's me... Bertie... Your brother... You'll never guess who I'm with... Ha! Actually no... You'll really won't guess - I've never heard of him...  (Shy roles his eyes) Says he's called Shy Yeti... Says he's a poet - but that he once trained to be a librarian!

SHY: (whispers)

I gave it up to pursue my writing...

WALLOW: (chuckling)

He says he gave up working in the library to write books... By the look of him it won't be long before he wishes that he was back stamping books like you lot... Don't give up the day job, aye!?

SHY: (taken aback)

That's not very polite...

WALLOW: (not listening to him)

Oh! Really? You have heard of him! What, really? REALLY! Now I don't like the sound of that... Do you want me to bop him one on the nose?

SHY: (sounding worn out)

NOW what have I done?

WALLOW: (indignantly)

She says you made her cry...

SHY: (defensively)

I never did...

WALLOW: (disapproving, protective)

What did he do to you, love? Oh! Oh, I see... (looks back at Shy) Apparently one of your little verses made her cry... You weren't rude about her, were you?

SHY: (flustered)

Of course not! We've never met - I don't think we've ever met...

WALLOW: (still somewhat suspicious)

You're absolutely certain that you've never dated any lady named Daphne?

SHY: (awkwardly)

It's unlikely! I tend not to frequent that... area of... experience... If you see what I mean...

WALLOW: (quite upbeat, when all is said and done)

Oh, really... Into fellas, are we? Well, that's alright then... Of course, I am married, by the way, to a lady - just in case you wondered...

SHY: (attempting to flatter)

Thank you for clarifying... And what a lucky lady she certainly is...

WALLOW: (becoming suddenly impatient)

Isn't she, just? Anyway... My sister wants a word... (he holds the phone up) In a way I’m surprised – but in another way it’s just like her – she actually seems to know who you are, so be nice to her – she’s my little sister… It’s Daphne, remember… She’s 42.

SHY: (slightly lost for words)

Oh,.. Good age! Hello... Daphne?

DAPHNE: (chipper, almost disbelieving)

Hello... Good heavens! Is that really the poet, Shy Yeti?

SHY:

It is... How nice to speak to a...

DAPHNE: (curious)

A fan! Oh yes... Very much so... So, are you friends with my brother?

SHY: (slightly fazed)

Err... I guess... We've only just met, actually... (pauses) I must say - this is quite unusual... I'm not sure I've ever...

DAPHNE: (flattering)

Had a fan before? Oh really, Mr Yeti... I can't believe that!

SHY: (interested to hear)

So which of my books do you have, exactly? Which poem was it that made you cry?

DAPHNE: (sounding a little awkward)

Well, it was less of a poem and more of a verse, actually...

SHY: (encouraging)

They're not so terribly different...

DAPHNE: (weakly)

It was in a card though - not a book...

SHY: (suddenly recalling that he had once written verse for such things)

Oh...

DAPHNE: (more enthusiastically)

It was in a valentine's card... How did it go now? Roses are red... Violets are pink... You look quite daft and you probably stink! Lovely! It really moved me...

SHY: (uncertain)

Really? Are you sure I wrote that?

DAPHNE: (insistent)

It says so on the back of the card...

SHY: (mutters)

Oh well... I must have done then...

DAPHNE: (rather over-sharing)

I heard you on local radio too, once... You were very good... My pet silver fish wasn't so keen though - he nibbled the carpet and then pooed into the gap he'd made...

SHY: (still a tad baffled)

Oh... I do apologise... I'm not sure if I can offer any form of compensation...

DAPHNE: (feistily)

You could always come to my library and read to some of my enquirers... If you would... Sorry! That's rather bold of me to ask, I know...

SHY: (thinking about it for a second and then replying)

I'm sure I could do that; if it would make up in some way for the damage to your carpet!

WALLOW: (crossly)

Did you damage her carpet?

SHY: (impatiently)

Not me... Her silver fish - but it appears my voice may be to blame...

DAPHNE: (pleading)

Will you come along? Right now, Mr Shy? We're nearby... My brother will show you...

SHY: (growing suddenly quite enthusiastic)

I will, yes... Yes, of course - it will be my pleasure...

...AND SO TIME PASSES AND MUCH TO HIS OWN SURPRISE SHY GOES WITH BERTRAM WALLOW TO HIS SISTER DAPHNE'S LIBRARY AND HE IS RELIEVED TO DISCOVER THAT IT IS QUITE A NORMAL VENUE FOR SUCH BOOK-RELATED ACTIVITIES... SADLY, HOWEVER, THERE ARE VERY FEW PEOPLE WAITING FOR HIM TO DO THE READING...

DAPHNE: (happily)

When I got to work this morning I had no idea that I'd be sharing a cup of tea with my favourite poet – my favourite yeti, no less...

WALLOW: (shocked)

Steady on, old girl… (turning to Shy) She's just being nice... Don’t let it go to your head!

SHY: (whispers back)

Alright… I won’t… I'm well aware of that...

DAPHNE: (she has still heard them, trying to reassure Shy)

No... No... Not at all...

WALLOW: (continues)

You do realise that she only invited you because the original speaker couldn't show up... That's why there's nobody here now... They heard you were coming... You were not a suitable replacement...

DAPHNE: (losing her temper)

Don't be so mean... That isn't the truth at all...

SHY: (apologetic)

Really... I understand if it is... Who was your original speaker?

DAPHNE: (slightly unimpressed)

Oh... One of the darlings of the Women's Institute... Lady Tabitha Whatnot...

SHY: (somewhat mockingly)

A lady, no less! Is that her actual surname? I thought they were usually double-barrelled!

DAPHNE: (trying not to laugh)

Oh, she is... I just can't remember what is and I can't be bothered to go and look it up... She wasn't my choice! I do recall that she was meant to be speaking about the science of dropped-stitches in the self-production of cardigans and other knit-wear! Exciting, aye!?

SHY: (sighing)

Ah! Well, I never had a chance of competing against that – or her - now, did I?

WALLOW: (chuckling)

You said it...

DAPHNE:

Lilywhite-Abbers...

SHY: (confused)

I never did... Sorry, Daphne - I beg your pardon is what I meant to say! Was that a curse or a sneeze or possibly a smidgeon of both?

DAPHNE: (pleased with herself)

Sorry... That was her name... I remembered it now... But anyway... Yes... Perhaps it was a tall-order on this occasion - the ladies were very keen on hearing what Lady Tabitha - had to say; if we'd have known that you were coming instead then it would have been different... I guess the mistake was expecting the audience from stitching to be the same as an audience who wants to hear daft poems about cats!

SHY: (slightly indignant)

I don't only write about cats, you know...

WALLOW: (supportive, for once)

And to be fair old ladies do tend to own cats... They never gave him a chance...

SHY: (flattered for a moment)

True... And thank you... He's right!

DAPHNE: (kindly)

He is... Never mind, aye... I say we have the show anyway - we've an audience of sorts...

THEY ALL STARE AHEAD AT THE AFOREMENTIONED "AUDIENCE" WHICH IS MADE UP OF STUFFED TOYS AND DOLLS FROM THE KID'S SECTION...

WALLOW: (back to being rude again)

Better turn-out than expected; although apparently the stuffed giraffe refused to turn up!

SHY: (snaps, but then grins)

Oh shut up... Shall I begin?

DAPHNE: (excitedly)

Yes, please...

SHY: (slightly put out)

You're not going to announce me?

DAPHNE: (shaking her head, smiling weakly)

I don't think so, no...

SHY: (taking a deep breath before beginning)

Okay, right! So, I intend to begin this afternoon with one of my dafter, sillier poems! It’s called DISCO YETI and it’s one that reminds me of my younger, more agile days!

DAPHNE COUGHS LOUDLY TWICE TO GET HIS ATTENTION, SHY LOOKS OVER.

DAPHNE: (disappointed)

Won't you do my favourite?

SHY: (weary, but with patience)

Yes... Yes... Alright... (clears throat again) Roses are red... Violets are pink... You look quite daft and you probably stink!

DAPHNE APPLAUDS ENTHUSIASTICALLY - WALLOW JUST SHAKES HIS HEAD!

DAPHNE: (applauding loudly)

MORE!! MORE!! (she looks cross and begins stamping her foot) MOOORRRRREEE!!!

SHY:

Oh... Really, you mean!? (he beams) Roses are red... Violets are pink... You look quite daft and you PROBABLY stink!

THERE IS MORE APPLAUSE - WALLOW GETS TO HIS FEET AT THIS POINT..

WALLOW: (clearly ready to go)

Right... That's that then! Are we done?

SHY: (disappointed)

You don't want any more?

DAPHNE: (finally finishing clapping)

Oh, darling - I'm sorry... I think we've run out of time... Anyone for a cup of tea?

SHY: (sighing again)

Oh, go on then... I've got nothing else planned...

DAPHNE: (jumping to her feet - hurrying away)

MARVELLOUS!!

WALLOW: (lowers his voice)

I wouldn't stay long - she'll be on about her in-growing toe-nails and her latest doomed love affair if you linger too long... I should know, I live with her...

SHY: (suddenly having an idea)

SHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!

SUDDENLY BERTIE WALLOW GOES SILENT AND WANDERS OFF TO SIT IN A CORNER; DAPHNE RETURNS CARRYING A PLATE OF BISCUITS AND LOOKS BOTH SURPRISED AND IMPRESSED...

DAPHNE:

Golly! You really are up on your current library techniques aren't you? There's always a job here if you want it...

SHY: (slightly worried)

Don't tell anyone... I knew it would come in handy sometime, but I'm not actually chartered... A librarian friend of mine taught me it...

DAPHNE: (loyally)

Won't say a thing... I'll go and fetch the tea-pot...

SHY: (sighing again)

Fantastic! (mutters to self) I shall contemplate my afternoon and maybe even write a poem about it...
